Montana is an interesting state, and Helena is a most interesting town and the capital city. The Historical Society Museum is a wonder, and no visitor should miss it. The Charlie Russell display is a classic, and everyone will get something out of it. All the displays are first rate, and the Board that runs the place is even considering... More

Near the capitol building in Helena Montana is the Montana Historical Society Museum and the Charlie Russell Art Exhibit. You need a minimum of 2 hrs. to see everything. There are active displays and hands on displays. The 60 some art works and statues are thrilling to see and the tell you something about the artist. A must see on... More

The Montana Historical society museum is a true gem. The charlie Russell collection is large and features "when the land belonged to God". One of Charlie's signature works. Be sure to visit the museum store. Nicely done presentation of Western books and other unique offerings.

Far and away, this is the best historical museum that I have seen in the U.S. The displays are of art museum quality, with well-chosen artifacts, readable texts and good signage. It is a balanced presentation of Montana history, both pre- and post- European settlement.

The exhibition of Charles M Russel's work on the life of the First Nations and the early European settler was fascinating. So was the cartoon exhibit of Stan Lynde.

We go to the museum about once per year and always enjoy the displays. It is easy to imagine life back in the day and disconnect from our digital chaos for a time! It is laid out well so you don't feel crowded. Great place!

I took my kid to this place for a field trip for homeschool ... he had a ball wandering around and seeing everything . we walked from the hotel so traveling to the site isn't that hard or confusing. the neatest thing my kid liked was the white buffalo and reading about it. very informative place to visit and get... This museum has a fine display of Charlie Russell artistry. The Montana and Native American history is well displayed and easy to follow through time and by topic. We particularly enjoyed the Lewis and Clark information. The staff is extremely helpful. They currently have a special display of Stan Lynde's works, which was enjoyable.
