With a commanding view from atop a bluff, Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site is one of the best representations of early 20th Century sensibilities in the Midwest. Walk through the 31-room, 12,000-square-foot lodge built atop two natural caves by Sedalia lawyer John Homer Bothwell. You will marvel at the owner’s eclectic tastes and how a country gentlemen furnished a recreational lodge for himself and his friends. Most of the furnishings in the house are original, and the property also has a three-mile hiking and mountain biking trail.

Beautiful setting...odd house

We enjoy touring old historic homes, but this one takes the cake. You can tell this place was built by a man with no womans' touch. The home was built in three stages, and it... read more

We set out on a beautiful, unusually warm Saturday and this was our first stop! With tons of visitors in the parking lot we were disappointed to discover it closed due to staff illness. Not sure it was a temporary close from the sign. To bad website didn't give an indication of this situation. May try again someday.

This is an insight into a different time period in Missouri's history. Lots of little details makes it a worthwhile visit. It was originally Stonyridge Farm and the area shows you why. There are some hiking areas around the lodge that are pretty. Some are very challenging and can be done on mountain bikes. The lodge has 31 rooms and... More

We enjoy touring old historic homes, but this one takes the cake. You can tell this place was built by a man with no womans' touch. The home was built in three stages, and it shows. The woodwork and stonework are amazing, but it is like a maze...which is fun, don't get me wrong...200 steps in this house! Every corner... More

For years we've driven past this mansion & have wanted to tour it but never felt like we had the time. This past fall we finally did & it was so worth it. We had a guide with us who was very informative & we were able to spend as much time as we liked in each part of the... More

Bothwell Lodge is an impressive sight from the road but the real wonders are inside. The admission per adult for the Bothwell Lodge tour is only $4 and you receive a fairly exhaustive 50-minute guide through almost all of the lodge from top to near bottom (the cave is unfortunately off limits). Our guide, Missy, was very knowledgeable and made... More

The Lodge is very close to Route 65. Southbound you will probably miss seeing it due to the way it is situated on a bluff, but northbound it is seen majestically perched on the bluff. $4 per adult for a guided tour of the inside was well worth it. Tours are given at the top of the hour and are... More

The Bothwell Lodge is outside Sedalia, built on a beautiful bluff. It is a large, rambling house built by a rich Sedalia lawyer and businessman . It is furnished with a lot of the originak furniture and artwork. Our docent was informed and pleasant. If you like history and homes, you will enjoy this hour tour. There are also walking... More

What a beautiful location. I see why John Bothwell bought the land on the cliff to build his home. Take the time to take the tour. It is well worth the price and the guides are very knowledgeable. Most of the furnishings are original and you can imagine the family and friends playing cards in the game room or Mr.... More
