Explore a significant part of U.S. history when you visit the Old Courthouse, which was built between 1839 and 1862. Tour this architectural masterpiece with restored courtrooms and experience a time and place where Dred and Harriet Scott sued for their freedom and Virginia Minor fought for women’s right to vote. Through special exhibits, learn about St. Louis’ role in early settlers’ movement into western America.

At the Old Courthouse Gift Shop, choose from a wide selection of books, videos, apparel and educational toys related to St. Louis and African-American history.

Located just two blocks from the Arch (7 blocks walking distance during construction), the Old Courthouse is serving as the temporary Ticketing and Visitor Center for the Gateway Arch during construction.

During the renovation of the Museum of Westward Expansion under the Arch, some of the exhibits from there are temporarily located in the Court House. That's a real bonus, in addition to the Virginia Minor & Dredd Scott exhibits, the gorgeous architecture & murals! And the acoustics of the rotunda are amazing. Can't beat the price, either (free)!

We really enjoyed the history (particularly the Dred Scott court case) and exhibits in the Old Courthouse. The architecture is beautiful and well worth a visit, especially since it is so close to the Arch. The Park Rangers were very helpful and full of information as well.

A beautiful old building of historical interest. It had a huge rotunda or circle as its center that went 4 stories high. All the way up to the peak there were beautiful wall murals. Brancking off the center circle were four pathways to four galleries - Dred Scott Gallery, Colonial and Creole Gallery, Native American and Pioneer Gallery and the... More

The park rangers were helpful and informative. Great exhibits on St. Louis history, westward expansion, and Dred Scott. This serves as the main museum for the Arch during construction.

A very interesting Museum, however could do with a bit of a make over as it is a bit dark and dusty. Very good detail on the settling of St. Louis and the surrounding area.
