Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site preserves a now-vanished part of Missouri: The stately Bootheel mansion. Filled with original pieces and furnished in the style it was in during its heydays of the 1860s-1880s, the ornate mansion provides a history lesson in every corner. In fact, most of the original furnishing purchased by Amanda Hunter, the house's first owner (with her husband William) are still in the house.

As a local, I have been to the Hunter Dawson Home many times. It is still an interesting place to visit and it was especially interesting to see it through my granddaughter's eyes as this was her first visit.

There aren't many attractions in Southeast Missouri that compare to the Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site. The house is absolutely beautiful and the collection of the family furniture is unlike anything I've ever seen. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable.

I always love going here. I was honored to escort my art classes and club there before I retired and could not wait to do a personal visit for the Christmas tour! The tour guides went above and beyond for our group, dressed in period clothing and got to see a black powder gun firing demonstration during a special reenactment.... More

I have only been to the house during the candlelight tours at Christmas time and I keep going back, year after year. History has been very well preserved and the Christmas decorations are true to the time period, except the white lights on the trees, but that does not take away from the atmosphere. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and... More

Built around 1860, the mansion was in the same family for nearly a century before it was donated to the town of New Madrid and then became a state historic site. Most of the furniture is original. At Christmas time they open the mansion up for a candle light tour with guides in period costumes. It is especially beautiful with... More

Sarah, our young tour guide, was very knowledgeable and informative and fun. She not only told us about the family, the furnishings, and the history of the home but also included extras, like letting us smell men's cologne of the period, lift the skirts of dresses on display in one bedroom so we could see the many layers of women's...
