Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I originally didn't know if I'd bother walking up all these stairs I saw behind the hospital ruins of Kingston. But I decided might as well. And it was so worth it. I actually didn't walk up any stairs, as there is a well worn dirt path to the right of them, well right next to them. I just walked up that. Not far up there's a lookout looking back over the hospital and ruins behind it, including a building you go into if you go on The Ghost Dinner in the lantern carrying latter part of that night. You can also just turn around and get some great views before there and all the way up after. Then there's two lookouts on the left, one about half way up, and another just about at the top (where there is a flag pole, hence the name of the hill I guess. These both look out on Philip Island, over Slaughter Bay and your seeing Kingston from the opposite end you will see if you walk up Driver Christian Road after Bloody Bridge. If you imagine Kingston as a rectangle, another way to see it is from the side of the rectangle, Queen Elizabeth Lookout.

Anyway, only a few more steps up from there, on the right is a lookout looking over Arthur's Vale, the farming area of the old convict days. There's info on some signage up there telling you interesting stuff like they deliberately gave them hand hoes to use, to make the work more laborious. There's some interesting names on memorial benches such as Rug on the way up there.

Well worth the small climb up Flagstaff Hill for beautiful views over Kingston and the Bay.
A few chairs up the steps for a breather and to admire the views.

Look - the whole purpose of visiting is to experience the history and culture of the Island and the pier and historical area.
The walk up to the viewing areas gives wonderful views over all of that
It is an absolute must see.

A nice alternative to Queen Elizabeth Lookout. The trail begins at the rear of the Surgeon's Quarters and extends up the hill. It is only a short walk but is steps all the way, so probably not suitable for those with mobility issues. There are a number of seats along the trail to rest if needed. Provides great views west along the coastline towards Emily Bay and lower part of Kingston Historic Area. A second lookout looks north along Arthur's Vale Area. Worth the effort.

A very well maintained staircase from base to the Flagstaff lookout area makes it a challenging but safe climb. Several rest area seats on the way. Great views. Not for bad hips or knees!

We found two places to lookout. One is halfway up that you can stop and take a breather but the climb to the top is well worth it.
The track is well maintained but can be a bit energy sapping doing it in the middle of the day in Summer.

This is a bit of a climb up very a very good stepped path and requires a reasonable level of fitness but it is worth the trip to the top just for the view from another angle

A short climb on well-established steps gives two opportunities for a great view of the penal settlement in the opposite direction to the Queen Elizabeth Lookout.
