Thomas Hart Benton's life is present in both his home and his paintings, and both are preserved at Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio State Historic Site. A trip to the home and studio of the renowned painter, sculptor, lecturer and writer offers a glimpse into how the talented Benton lived and worked. Benton converted half of the carriage house into his art studio, which remains as he left it. Visitors can still see coffee cans full of paintbrushes, numerous paints, and a stretched canvas waiting to be transformed into another of his masterpieces. Thomas Hart Benton died in his studio in 1975.

Was with a group of art docents, so we know what a good art tour is all about. The Museum Director gave us our tour. It was fascinating. He was better than most other docents I've experienced, with fascinating tidbits about Benton's life and work and relationships. Saw Benton's studio and home. Well worth a visit to learn more about... More

If you are a Benton fan you will enjoy his home. The house and studio look like the couple just stepped out. Pretty much has been left the way it was when his wife died. I hope the state finds some money to do some maintenance work on the home and grounds as they look pretty tired. Otherwise - I... More

What a great learning experience for me to visit the Thomas Hart Benton Home. I loved the studio, house and the decision to leave it untouched. Our guide was so informative and knew so much about Tom and his family. I love the gustiness of his wife! Have a new respect for his paintings. My book club went after reading... More

This is an interesting place to visit if you are interested in art. Thomas Benton was controversial during his life and visiting his home and studio sheds light on his character, formative influences and his family. We were very lucky to have an extremely good guide, a student in al local high school with an obvious passion for the artist,... More

This is a nice and modest house in a nice, old neighborhood. Learn how the artist worked and lived. The tour guide was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. There is a small charge for the tour. It doesn't take long and is well worth it.

The Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio is one of my favorite tucked-away places in Kansas City. It not only lets you see the studio space where Benton created his distinctive work -- still with his brushes and all the accoutrements that were there in his day -- but allows you inside the Benton family's home. It too is preserved... More

This is one of Kansas City's hidden destinations. Located in an historic neighborhood, Benton's studio and home are preserved. The tour offers visitors a chance to see where the artist painted, with insights into how he created his work. I loved seeing and hearing about his initial sketches and how he used the natural light to paint. It was also... More

One big advantage of artist home museums is that you get to focus totally on one artist and Thomas Hart Benton's home is certainly one of those. The guide was great and had many insightful comments into his work and times. Worthwhile visit.

Very interesting personal tour. Staff was great. The tour started in the studio and progressed to the home. The staff was very knowledgeable and gladly answered questions. Visiting would be difficult for those with limited mobility.
