The staff at the Visitors were very helpful and we enjoyed the short movie about Dr.Sir Wilfred Grenfell. His medical and interdenominational missionary services were a boon those poor people in northern Newfoundland and Labrador fishing villages. He undertook long and sometimes dangerous work in those remote areas. There are many photographs on view as well as copies of the books he wrote; so many things to read. A good gift store on a lower floor. His house near the Hospital is open for viewing. He was a most remarkable man and the site is well recommended.

After walking through the house you can understand why it was referrd to as "The Castle on the Hill." The house and furnishing are just beautiful. At the time of our visit we were the only visitors in the house. We appreciated the fact that we were able to take our time and look at everything and not feel rushed.

This is a "must see" house while in St John's. It's full of atmosphere and the walk up the trail to the top of the hill is worth the effort.

A must -see visit after driving the scenic west coast highway up the peninsula, is St. Anthony, and especially the Grenfell Historic Properties. They highlight the amazing contribution of Dr. Wilfred Grenfell and his family to the spirtual and medical health of the inhabitants in the region, and the coastal area of Labrador, generally dependent on the fishing industry for a livelihood. The hamlets and villages depended on the networking and medical services provided by the mission boats. A wonderful glimpse in to the past of this rugged region.

An English medical missionary, Grenfell arrived in 1892 to investigate the condition of people in the Labrador fishery, thereafter devoting his life to improving the life of the locals. The displays in the interpretation center were first rate, describing his life and work in vignettes and themes. The role of other doctors and nurses is also outlined. You will leave with an appreciation of someone whose devotion to the area saved lives, making him one of the province’s heroes.
