Overview
More
The Battle of Carthage was the earliest full-scale battle of the Civil War, preceding Bull Run by 11 days. Battle of Carthage State Historic Site contains a quiet meadow and the spring that made the area an encampment for both the Union and Confederate troops during the battle. The area is little changed in its appearance since the battle was fought on July 5, 1861. A few minutes off of Interstate 44, the site interprets the battle that set the stage for a decisive showdown a month later at Wilson’s Creek.

My grandfather grew up nearby. The battlefield borders the town of Carthage and it amazing that a civil war battlefield is so far west. In school we were taught Bull Run and Gettysburg. Hard to imagine that one of the early battles occurred in Carthage,...More

A car park with an information board. The site has no other interesting features. More knowledge can be gained from the Internet. Of value to historic and Civil War enthusiasts. Otherwise pass it by.

The battle site is on the outskirts of Carthage, MO in a very scenic site with a small creek running through it. Unfortunately, someone did not enjoy its beauty as much as we did as vandals had done some spray painting of the parking lot...More

Simlar to the civil war museum. Tastefully displayed with lots of information. Certainly a group destination or tours. Way things are going this type of stuff will be gone in the US 😡. Its part of our history. GO see it, it's worth your time.
