So much excitement. And if course racing Cathy Freeman was a highlight. The exhibitions on the upper level is similalrly great fun for all.Visited January 2023Written 28 January 2023

- wrigglypearMelbourne, Australia122 contributionsA busy day outBusy day with quite a few school groups in and it was difficult for kids not in schools to get a turn at activities with little teacher involvement and s hool kids pushing in. There were a number of things closed also. There were also some parts of displays not working. We purchased lunch from the Cafe and the wait was very long, even longer if you wanted hot food or coffee. We had over priced sandwiches which were ok. We caught the train and walked the distance from the station about 10mins, with signs pointing the way if needed.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 July 2023

Very popular were the sporting options - e..g. beat Cathy Freeman, defending the soccer goal. We also went to the Planetarium which is great fun and very interesting watching all this orchestrated activity in the sky with a great guide.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 October 2023

We loved science works, our 8yr old son had a blast! The planetarium is a must see for any astronomy fan! And of course the gift shop has souvenirs of all ranges.

While super interactive, cost to visit is very expensive once you included all the “add ons”- beware you will need to pay entry even for babies. Exhibitions are clean and functioning but many are dated and in need of upgrades if charging the price they are.
We were also given incorrect information meaning we missed a show we had paid $50 for. Staff were incredibly rude and unhelpful when trying to sort out the issue.
Disappointing.

The place is small and the exhibits are limited.
The shows are, well, not exciting.
The kids do like some of the exhibits. But, when I asked them "Will you want to come back again?", their answer is "No".

Great value ($15 per adult, kids are free).
Went with my husband and 18 month old toddler. My husband & I would have been bored on our own, but we spent 3 hours there & only left because our daughter was so tired from having the best time. We didn’t do the planetarium or lightning room.
A lot of the attractions were partly broken or out of order.
The canteen only sells water & hot drinks (no soft drinks or juice etc). The food is normal tourist attraction prices. A focaccia was $14.50, small fruit salad $4.50 & chips with 3 nuggets $7.50. Plenty of outdoor seating but no cleaning service so it’s all very dirty.
There’s 2 outdoor playground with some shade which our daughter loved.
Parking is $6 or you can park on the street for free if you get there before 10:30am.

Would a 17m cope with this ok? Is it challenging without the pram, he's a bolter :-)

Hi Fiona,
There is so much to see & do with all the lights & moving attractions as well as an area upstairs suitable for the 'little ones' that at 17 months old he/she would enjoy it.
However just the very nature of the facility leads itself that children just want to run all over the place, my niece certainly did when we took her here at between 2yr - 3yr.
= I would say to take your child here however take the pram. There is ample space to manoeuvre in between exhibits and there is an elevator on site.
Hope that you find this helpful, enjoy your visit!
Kindest Regards, Beck.

Would this be suitable for a 10 month old?

Yes. The best place would be kids area upstairs I think. There are a lot of tactile areas both upstairs and downstairs, so start on the ground floor and try it all. I think If you allocate an hour or so for exploring inside, Then Go outside and have a play on the playground and a crawl on the grass. I took my kids there when they were that age but with older siblings. Possibly waiting til over 12 months may be more worthwhile, but it is interesting and fun for all ages.
