Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have been coming to the Sydney Markets on a regular weekly basis and generally we are quite happy with the produce. The prices are cheaper than your local Veg Market. However there are some variations. Lately we have noticed much higher prices and deteriorating quality. Perhaps the weather may have something to do with it, as well as the recent catastrophic events with the bushfires and the subsequent flooding. We can still find lower prices on similar goods but some items are priced the same or in some instance more than local shops! We have compared prices! So you need to be extra careful.... Still you are bound to save quite a bit when shopping, particularly in bulk. We found that coming at around 1.00 pm is a very good time regarding parking, better prices and fewer shoppers.

If you can't handle crowds then this market is not for you! We got there early as my aim was to get flowers and it was already packed. The parking is a bit of a nightmare but having a car does make it easier to get your purchases home if you buy bulky items. Produce market was good but ridiculously busy (not sure if that is typical as it was coming up to Christmas). Lots of food is sold in bulk so good for businesses however might not be helpful if you only want a few items. If you want a trolley you need to pay a deposit.

Take your car, otherwise you'll end up having to carry everything home on the train!
Take cash as most vendors don't accept credit cards - there are a couple of cash machines, but you will have to walk to find them.
Wear comfortable shoes and clothes, this is not a place for high heels!
Be on the lookout for forklifts running around, they don't tend to slow down. Be patient, there are a lot of people there on a Saturday morning all doing their shopping. Some vendors only sell in box lots, but the majority don't have any minimum quantities.
We tend to stick to vendors that show what the prices are so they can't make up the price depending on your nationality and as we've been going regularly for years, we know the vendors that grow their own as opposed to agents for the growers so we support the farmers directly where we can.
We also buy our seafood, poultry, meat, cheeses, herbs/spices and nuts here and because there is a huge turnover, most things are super fresh and last for a lot longer than the stuff you buy in the supermarket. The wholesale flower market is a short walk away and they also sell to the public and the prices are generally a 1/2 or less of what you would pay at the florist.
We don't go here to buy food for immediate consumption but if you are looking for a coffee or something for breakfast, there are a couple of cafes and kebab vans where you can grab a bite, but it's nothing fancy.
This place is not for tourists, it's for locals that want to get a bargain on their weekly shop but if you don't like crowds, don't bother!

This time I walked in from the highway. Those entrances are clearly designed to kill people and the people who drive to the markets usually look like obvious perpetrators. Even if you walk in from the station, the markets are mostly dangerous roads and car parks and it's all very dirty. The Sunday market was like Paddy's in Haymarket - mostly cruddy trinkets without prices marked and low quality clothes and cookware. Just like Paddy's though, the food is worth it. The seafood was particularly good but all the fresh and packaged food seemed very good value.

Firstly, beware - this isn't a place for the feint hearted, young families or sightseers. It is basically a refugee camp, with massive crowds of newly arrived to our shores pushing and shoving for the cheapest box of 20 kilo peaches or day old prawns they can find.
Secondly, Ok, Saturday 6am-2pm the place ONLY sells fresh produce. Fish, fruit, vegetables. Sunday it sells junk - rusty tools, Simpsons T-shirts, made-in-China fake fangs ect. and no fresh produce. Saturday is an absolute brothel it is so busy; you can barely find parking. The produce is reasonable quality and a little cheaper than the stores, but everything is sold in such large batches that you end up with food that goes to waste. They do have some good tropical produce though - taro, cassava, plantains, breadfruit - which is why I go.

So disappointed the workers are so rude and the forklift drivers are crazy. Wouldn't visit again. I've been to alot of markets and this one would have to be the rudest one ever.

come towards the later part ~12-1pm (the entry closes at 2pm) and get some great deals as prices start to get slashed around 1pm. get a cart if you are loading a lot of stuff... I like to get some great deals walking and checking out on whats offered by various vendors... you may negotiate a little with some vendors and some are rude...
not a friendly atmosphere/navigation for disabled, infants, pregnant women or delicate people since the place is normally crowded with isles jammed sometimes with people pushing each other....
depending on when and what you buy - you may be able to save from 10s to 100s of dollars on veggies and fruits... buy boxes when possible for bigger savings...

This is not for tourists. Repeat. NOT FOR TOURISTS. But as a local, seeing where our fresh food comes from was an eye opener. The website does not tell you things you must know before going, ie you must wear safety vest and closed shoes. You must also go EARLY. You cannot hire a trolley an hour before it closes (ie could not hire at 7am). We treated it as a recon mission. So now armed with the "how" we will revisit.

The Sydney Market is a huge Godown with a stall concept. One can take a train to Flemington Station (and walk another 500 m) or drive to Sydney market. Do bring along a trolley (or hire one for $2) to cart the goodies that you buy. The retail section is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only. There are more stalls on Saturdays than on Sundays.
Right from fresh fish, a range of seasonal vegetable, flowers and fruits are sold by boxes or by the kilo. The catch from the sea is fresh and ample to chose from. The fruits and vegetables are definitely cheaper than what you may pay at the supermarkets. However, you need to be careful when buying items by boxes. Some of them may lack the expected quality control.
The place can be crowded depending on the time of your visit. Do walk around the whole market once before deciding to buy. Once you buy an item, you may find the same item at a cheaper price at a neighbouring stall. At times the cheaper ones may not be of the same quality. Hence pick quality produce and decide to pay if you are happy with the price.
If you are a tourist and happen to be nearby, a visit to the market is an experience.

You will find a variety of vegetables, fruits, seafood at wholesale prices. This provides an alternative to super markets where the produce they sell must look good. In fact there are a lot of fresh produce which may not look perfect but are indeed good for consumption. Here the prices are less than half what you pay for in super market. Try to avoid the weekend crowd if you can visit on Friday.

Are there stalls selling vintage/second hand clothing?
Written 9 May 2018
Officially 6am but we usually get there just before 6am and it's already packed with customers and we've sometimes found that a few popular items are sold out.
We've been as early as 5.30am at Christmas time and although there may be a few vendors still setting up, there are no issues.
