We got there after the visitor's center had closed so all we did was to walk the short trail by the parking lot. Nice trail with flowers and saw palmetto and bogs. Probably other trails as well, but we didn't get to find out.

Mississippi Sandhill Crane NWR protects some of the last remaining wet pine savanna, habitat for the critically endangered Mississippi subspecies of sandhill crane. It's just a half mile of I-10 in Gautier, so a nice spot for a break from driving. I was driving across...More

Well done visitor center, good background on Sandhill Crane ecology and related habitat - well worth the visit whether sandhill cranes around or not. One can go here in the rain, but need rain gear - all outdoors! Trail takes loops through different habitats, take...More

Our Garden Club (21 people) did the van tour. We saw Mississippi Sandhill Cranes and migrating cranes - plus a huge eagle nest and eagle. The visitors center has a display area with a video and knowledgeable, friendly volunteers.

We visited the wildlife refuge while vacationing in Gautier. The visitor center is great with a lot of information. Staff were very helpful and told us where,we might see,an alligator and we did. Good hiking trails are available. Will go,again when we can stay longer.

Late Fall to late spring - better chance to sight cranes, and weather more tolerable. I’ve been there mid-summer and done fine - but I grew up on gulf coast south Florida. Nesting roughly early winter into fledging early... More
