Soft jazz in a speakeasy/coffeehouse style environment- Friday evenings
Apr. 2015 • Couples
My wife and I have been wanting to experience this tucked-away musical venue since its inception nearly a year ago. However, it only exists on Friday evenings (and now apparently on Wednesday evenings). We, along with another couple, attended the first Friday in April and were blown away by the exceptional performance of a four-piece group headed by Connie Olson, the vocalist. It's an adventure finding the club. Scusi is downstairs in the middle of a block of storefronts on Water Street in Excelsior. There is a $10 cover charge but we all agreed it was the best $10 we've spent in a long time. The genre was '50s vintage soft jazz. If you closed your eyes you might imagine you were in a club in New York or Paris. The food and beverage offerings consisted of snacks and desserts from a local restaurant along with beer, wine, sodas, and water. Also, the proprietor was willing to order pizzas or salads from Olives restaurant (a few doors down) and offered to pick it up for us. By day Scusi is an antique shop, filled to the ceiling with all manor of upholstery, case goods, and accessories, so when the band took breaks we used the time to shop until they were ready to play the next set. It was a very enjoyable experience in a unique venue. If you like jazz and are looking for an adventure, consider spending a Friday evening at The Cellar at Scusi.
