Our group chartered the boat for a weekday cruise. Normally, the public cruises are only on weekends. The Minnehaha is a restored 1906 streetcar boat operated by volunteers. Passengers can watch the exposed engine in the center of the boat. According to one volunteer, the current engine is a 1930's engine similar to what a boat would have had in 1906. The boat does have a bathroom. In good weather, the staff opens the windows offering an amazing view of the lake. There is also space for passengers on top for those who don't mind being exposed to the weather. Eat before or after your cruise, since food and drinks are not allowed on the boat. There are a number of restaurants in Excelsior, the main starting point. Some cruises also begin in Wayzata.

Such a nice way to spend a few hours on Lake Minnetonka! The charm of the boat is not only in its history, but the pleasant individuals who staff it as well. While cruising the lake you are given a very informative live presentation of the lakes history as well as the boats. I was so pleased to be able to cleary hear and understand the individual speaking as often on tours that is not the case, but not on the Steamboat Minnehaha. They have worked to make everything seamless and enjoyable and have succeeded.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip aboard the Steamboat Minnehaha. The boat was rescued from the bottom of Lake Minnetonka in the 1980s & lovingly restored by volunteers over a number of years. Now it runs between Wayzata and Excelsior on a regular schedule at a reasonable cost. It was one of a number of steamers that crossed the lake before roads encircled it, It's fun to see the engine, and also to sit in the boat as it cruises at about 5-10 knots across the lake. You can sit up top, or if too hot/sunny, underneath. The captain answers questions about the boat and engine. This is highly recommended.

Had company from out of town and after 29 years of living in Excelsior decided to try out the Minnehaha. Oh my gosh...what a great experience. The staff was super friendly, professional and extremely knowledgeable about their boat and the history around the lake. The sound system was excellent as were the views. So much fun. We will not wait to have guests to return.
