Amid the prairie grasses are islands of uncovered rock, where American Indian ancestors left carvings — petroglyphs — humans, deer, elk, buffalo, turtles, thunderbirds, atlatls and arrows. They tell a story that spans more than 7,000 years.

Hard to believe that these were found on these outcropping of stone. Engravings tell us a story of long ago. Guides have some good tales too

My wife and I stopped at Jeffers Petroglyphs on our way to Pipestone, MN from Minneapolis. It was an excellent visit. This is a huge outcrop of Sioux Quartzite rock that stands above the surrounding flat crop land. There is a very nice visitor center...More

Too bad it was raining the day we went. It was hard to see the petroglyphs. There was a pathway to walk once on the rocks, and we saw information signs all the way atop, but there wasn't a way to get up there. Not...More

Jeffers Petroglyphs Historic Site has a nice visitors center with daily interpretative programs. There is a 3/4 mile path that you can take or a much shorter walk to the petroglyphs. Highly recommend taking the tour to get the most out of the visit as...More

Great real history in and about Minnesota here. Good trip for the whole family. Awesome information on life in the area many, many years ago. Great gift shop as well. We were pleasantly surprised.
