You must visit this fantastic Citadelle if you are in the area. So much history. All for free The views are pretty superb too. It can several hours to wander around here. Cafes and restaurants plus a campsite within walls Highly recommendMore

The citadel de blaye is a typical fortress built by the famous architect Vauban. There are great similarities to other such fortresses built by him, like the one in Montmedy in North eastern France.

We walked round the ramparts while staying at the Hotel de la Citadelle. Good views across the estuary. There are some intriguing barred entrances, it would have been interesting to see what was inside.More
