Many sights in the Samarkand area consist of huge monuments, They are meant to clobber viewers into awe. The nearby Ak Saray place would have been one more example -- even the remaining ruins are massive.
This mosque and mausoleum about 1.2km south of Ak Saray in the smallish town of Shahrisabz offers a sensible counterpoint. It has balance, harmony and is appropriately scaled.
Known variously as Dor-ut-Tilavat, Dor-ut-Tilovat, Dorut Tilavet, and Dor-i-Tilavelt, it's local nickname seems to be simply Kok Gumbaz (blue dome).
There are two main parts to it: the bigger part being the mosque and the smaller part the mausoleum.
Under the main blue dome, which resembles so many blue domes in Samarkand and Bukhara, is a surprise: the prayer hall is lightly coloured -- a kind of sand-beige. Nothing like the overpowering blue, brown and turquoise in prouder buildings. This colour gives the prayer hall a lift and a sense of quiet and space. Beautiful.
Across the yard is the mausoleum. It has a small entrance which you might miss, but once inside, it takes your breath away. It's mostly white with restrained blue decoration. Look up and you see a marvellous ceiling decoration under its dome.

Darut Tilavet is a stone's throw from Dar as Siabas. There's a small park (and toilets) in between.
I did Shakhrisabz as a day trip from Samarkand. Paid USD35 to a driver to drive there (2 hours over a mountain crest) wait 4 hours and drive back. It was enough. Shahrisabz is too boring a town to stay overnight in and there's not enough to see or do to warrant an overnight.

Overall, we were very disappointed with Shakhrisabz, which was overly landscaped and commercialized. The best of the sights we saw in town was Dorut Tilovat, a burial complex for Timurlane's forebears. It was only here that we got a real sense of this as a medieval town and not a city park with paper mache rocks.
The delights of this place are familiar ones to those on the Silk Road: turquoise tiles, intricate portals, leafy courtyards and solemn marble tombs. However, this site has been sensitively restored and it is more of a tranquil experience.
Entrance costs 7,000 som for foreigners.

This is one of the over-restored historical and religious monuments of the country. However, what is lost in historical accuracy is at least partly compensated by having a good idea of what the complex may well have looked like. Apart from Timur's crypt and his son's grave, there is an extensive burial ground and a small exhibition. It is best viewed after some study of Timur's life and times, if only through an evening with Wikipedia. A welcome and interesting break on a ride between Bukhara and Samarqand

Dorut Tilovat was an ancient mosque, 5-10 minutes drive away from Amir Temur monument and through the main bazaar of Shakhrisabz. The dooms were under renovation and the main hall of the mosque was not in use while its compound was full of many small souvenir shops, relatively cheaper with better bargains as compared to those elsewhere. Wondering through a park, there was yet another monument with some mausoleums. In the outer vacinity of the mosque, we found a stinking 'Wash-Room" with no doors but usable only after paying Soum 500/- per person. Although there was no fee or charges for entry into any monument yet I won't recommend a travel or visit after seeing better sights in other cities of Uzbekistan. Nevertheless, if visited, buying souvenirs or the gifts are somewhat worth a perfect deal and one must not forget carrying the haversack lunch on person.

Visually, this is not as spectacular as some of the madrassas you must have visited in Samarkan, Bukhara and Khiva. It is, however, very significant in "the story of Timur". Built in early 13th century by Shams ud-Din it was an important educational center to promote Islam and Sufi ideas ; one of the pupils was Turghai, father of Timur. So started the coalition between the Timuruds and their spiritual mentors of the madrassa ; it was also a political alliance with Bukhara and gave Timur prestige because of a link with the Prophet Mohamed. Anyhow, this will probably be lost on most visitors. Suffice that the site is important and when you're in Shahrisabz, make sure you visit.

Decent complex. Not very unique and restoration is on-going. Doesn't take long to view, perhaps 15 minutes. Should see if visiting the area.

This mosque's exterior has been restored to splendor. The interior was closed when we visited. Our guide had no explanation for the closure.

This was on the way so it was worth a look and see. There is a fair bit of history and the inside of the complex is interesting to see.

Obviously, once in Shakhrisabz you must visit all of the monuments within the complex. After a fair walk through wonderful gardens there you will find this very rewarding monument.

This is a nice mosque. The interior is well-decorated. The day I visited, four children were playing inside and this gave the structure some life.
