- MarcusHurleyCalne, United Kingdom10,816 contributionsA real maze, I think we missed quite a bit!The Tosh Hovli Palace looked very unassuming from the outside and if you just popped your head through the door you'd see a dull courtyard with a European carriage in it, a gift from the Tsar and nothing else. There were doorways to other rooms and the place was a real warren with some rooms having displays and exhibitions, some being amazingly decorated courtyards, especially the harem and also a yurt used when the ruler wanted to pretend he was still a nomadic tribesman, not the ruler of an urbanised city state. The wall decorations and ceilings were again beautiful.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023

Hearing the stories of the palace was fantastic, we were transported back to another era of concubines, hidden doorways and lavish surrounds. The amazing ceramic tiles still remain today, a must visit.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 February 2024

If you're keen on visiting something that's not a madrassa, I can highly recommend the Tash Khauli palace. The inner courts are gorgeous and the details are stunning. Don't expect any (English) signs, so if you want to get to know the history, do hire a guide.
Be aware the palace has 2 entrances, both equally beautiful!

The beautiful palace was built from 1830 to 1841 for the ruler of the Khiva Khanate, Allah Kuli Bahadur Khan. It includes more than 260 rooms around three courtyards: that of the Harem, that of the audience hall for receiving petitioners, and that of the Court of Justice. The palace was constructed by some 1,000 slave laborers, with the first lead architect impaled for telling the Khan that the palace could not be built in two years as instructed. In the end, the man part of the palace took more than eight years to build, but the replacement architect was smart enough to keep his mouth shut about how long it would take. In visiting the palace, be sure to check out all the separate sections and rooms open for viewing. There Museum of Khorezm National Clothes is also housed in one of the sections off from the Harem courtyard.

The Tash Kauli Palace was completely restored in 2023. It is the second palace complex in Chiva, after Khuna Arc Palace. The palace is a very large complex with about 80 X 80 meters. Construction began in 1831. Completion was then about 1838, much later than planned. In the reception courtyard state guests could stay overnight in Yurten, the throne room is next door. Among the most beautiful is the Haremshof with its colorful Ivanas and an excellent small art museum.

We enjoyed a really interesting guided tour of the Khans Palace in Khiva.
It's an amazing place eith some stunning courtyards festooned with beautiful blue tiles.
Yhe Khans gmgarem where he kept his mistresses is a bit arresting but as a history lesson it's fascinating.
The Khan's bedroom can be visited as,well.
There is a Yurt in one of the courtyards, not sure why to be honest.
One beautiful courtyard after another and in exactly the right state of repair, not perfect but lived in.

This palace is the harem of the Emir of Khiva. While it is plain from the outside, within it boasts one of the most vibrant courtyards in Khiva, with extraordinary panels of tiling on all the walls. If you like the colour blue, this is the place for you as every shade from cerulean to deepest indigo is featured. The wooden ceilings are equally noteworthy, with brightly colored designs. Overall, the state of conservation is very high. Note, however, that the attraction is the architecture itself. The few exhibits on display are minor at best.

This was where the harem of the old Khanate of Khiva resided in former days. I was particularly impressed with the intricate mosaic tile-work and beautiful patterns, all highly intricate and detailed, in lovely shades of blue and turquoise. Particularly impressive, for those prepared to look upwards (far too many people are simply stunned by what they can see at eye-level to do this) is the wonderfully carved and coloured ceilings of each doorway - each one different from the next. Memorable!.....
