Lumbini is a holy place for every Buddhist, since it is the birthplace of Lord Buddha. The gardens are well maintained and sprawling, and it is advised to take a tuk-tuk (auto) to see the place extensively from inside. There are several Buddhist pagodas of various international countries inside the garden, which are very attractive and are an architectural feat as well. Avoid sunny and hot days, as the walks inside are long, and entirely open.
From India, the closest place of access is Gorakhpur which is a 3-hours drive. However, border transit formalities and traffic irregularities and congestion may take upto an additional hour also at times.

This is the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Need I say more?
The temple is set in a beautiful garden and which is meticulously maintained. There is a canal leading to the temple garden entrance.
Appropriately in my view, it is the most understated of all the temples in Lumbini and you can quietly meditate under one of the large trees close by.
Kenzo Tange’s master plan for the town (he also designed this garden) and the town are slowly taking shape. I will return in 5 years. Even now the results are breathtaking.

Highly recommended for Buddhist pilgrims to visit Maya Devi temple in Lumbini where Buddha was born. You will come to a golden baby Buddha before buying your entrance tickets. Spent some time to see the spot where Buddha was born and meditate. Outsiy there is a pond where Buddha and Maya Devi cleansed themselves. There is a bodhi tree also. We later visited the Chinese temple and Lin Son France temple.

It's a very beautiful & cool place which is located in Nepal (The birthplace of Siddharth Gautama). Later became known as the BUDDHA. I visited it last time to explore Maya Devi Temple at evening time. It looks so beautiful in the evening by lighting. Apart from the Maya Devi Temple, there are several other monasteries and meditation centres in Lumbini that offer visitors a chance to learn more about Buddhism and practice meditation.
I recommend to all people to visit Lumbini. ❤️

I had the privilege of visiting the most exquisite temple I have ever encountered. The ambiance was remarkable, with a pristine environment meticulously maintained, from the gardens to the structures. The serene atmosphere created an oasis of tranquility, allowing visitors to find solace and leave behind their sorrows. The stupas, preserved with great care, added to the temple's allure and historical significance. I was deeply moved by the proper marking of Buddha's birthplace within the temple, highlighting its profound importance.

This temple is named after the natural mother of Prince Siddhartha, the soon to be Buddha. The temple sits on the grounds where she gave birth and a marker at the temple indicates the exact spot. One of the holiest spots for Buddhists and kudos to the Nepali government for maintaining the peace and tranquillity of the holy spot.

Lumbini is situated at West part of Nepal.
After you arrive at Nepal from flight you will land at kathmandu.
There are two option to reach lumbini..
1.From there you can take domestic flight of 25 minutes time to Bhairawa and from there a public vehicle or cab to reach lumbini of 30 minutes.
2. Next you can take a roadways the direct public vehicle or hire private one which will take you 8 hours to reach there of distance around 400 KM. Choosing this option will be memorable to see the landscapes and diversity of Nepal.

I visited Lumbini in 1971 and absolutely loved the Mahamaya temple and the bodhi tree that grew there. It makes me so sad to see what they've done - such an outrage! A beautiful temple is now an ugly block of a building that looks as if it's already falling apart in true Nepali fashion.
I know the tree's gone - what of the statue of Mahamaya giving birth that used to be accessed by a side door - do you know?

I first visited a little later than you - in early 1978. I agree with your sentiments about the temple. I heard that the bodhi tree was cut down by Japanese - supposedly working on Tange's Master Plan - they took it to Japan where it was carved into prayer beads and sold for a lot of money. This happened when the Nepalese official in charge of the site was away for a while and the tree was one by the time he came back! The statue of Mayadevi was in situ for a long time. I think I am correct in saying that it has been moved to a museum - I am not sure if it is in the museum on site or in the National Museum in Kathmandu. If you want more information I can find out.

I want to come visit, but I want to plan an extended visit where I might be of service in some way. Are there any building, cleaning or landscaping projects I can work on in return for being able to just be there and perhaps stay in the area and meet some of you, the Staff?

What you can do is is to make an internet search for a ngo in the area, they might help you
