About
Hawara near the Fayoum oasis might not look as much today but in historical accounts it is a somewhat legendary place
Local guides know best when it comes to the most impressive sites hidden in the desert. If you book a guide with a Jeep, ask them to recommend some of their favorite spots and go on a desert safari. This option is great for people looking to hike and camp in the area. Fayoum boasts wonders such as an ancient petrified forest, hidden desert temples, the ancient ruins of a Greek city, a valley of watermelon-shaped rocks, and much more! Tell us 01001918549

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

This brick pyramid was covered with a lime layer, was 60 meters high and was the last large pyramid built in Egypt. Unfortunately you cannot visit the inside of the pyramid, as the water from the canal that now runs along it has penetrated the pyramid.
Next door there was also a huge building that had 3,000 rooms. These were still intact when Herod came here. He gave it the name 'The Labyrinth'.
But like so many monuments, these have also been demolished over time and used for other purposes. Here and there there are still fragments like silent memories.

We came here as part of a Biblical Egypt tour. You need a guide to explain the site, nothing is marked. This may have been the storehouses of Joseph, fascinating story to tell of that. It was totally deserted when we got there.

I visited this site in March 2011 (the date shown in the review is not correct). I combined this pyramid with a visit to the Pyramid of Sneferu (Medium Pyramid). I found it to be quite interesting. There is a small display of artifacts found in the area outside the pyramid (broken columns, parts of statues, and so forth).
You cannot enter this pyramid, the entrance is flooded, but you can take a peek inside (I'm sure it is still filled with garbage, shame too). The pyramid is made out of mud bricks. You can walk around the entire pyramid. About an hour is all you need to visit. Bring water. I don't recall a bathroom here, but there is a small build the guards use, there may be one inside. Not a tout in sight!
If you have the opportunity to visit, go see it. Very interesting with all the mud bricks, combine this stop with Pyramid of Sneferu, el Lisht, or el Lahun.

A mud-brick pyramid, the entrance to this is flooded, presumably because the water table from the nearby fairly large irrigation canal is at that height.
We were able to wander round it all right, but if you look at the photos, there is little else to see, so it doesn't need too long to visit

I came here on a private day trip from Cairo (I chartered a taxi outside the Mena House hotel in Giza). I am a professional Egyptologist, and for me the visit was richly rewarding - though I think those with a more casual interest might be rather underwhelmed (unless you like the pleasure of getting well off the beaten track). The pyramid at Hawara belongs to King Amenemhat III (19th century BC), and has a mud-brick core (which is all that is left today, after the stone cladding was removed in medieval times). It hence looks somewhat amorphous today. The underground chambers of the pyramid are flooded by a modern canal that actually cuts through the ancient complex, meaning you can only walk a few steps down in the first entry corridor. To the south of the pyramid are the (rather meagre) remains of the once vast funerary temple the king build to service his cult. This complex was still largely intact c. 450 BC when the Greek historian Herodotus visited it, and was so impressed by it that he likened it to the 'labyrinth' of legend. Sadly, nearly all the stone has been robbed out today, leaving just fragments of limestone paving and granite column drums to attest to the glory of what once was. Practical note: Hawara and Lahun lie in the modern Fayum Governorate - tourists visiting from Cairo will be accompanied by a police escort during their stay in this region.

Beautiful, but, due to erosion, in poor condition! Hard to come and because terrorists are here too, it is a dangerous area!

It is closed to the public due to flooding but the outside is very interesting and well worth a visit. It is not popular with tour buses so it is not crowded.

Great pyramid, mudbrick construction. A little hard to get to but worth the trip. You can go inside a little ways but the high water table has reclaimed a lot of what was under the pyramid.

First of all, just getting here was quite the adventure. We were with a tour group. To get there, our van was escorted by a truck in front of us and behind us filled with military guys with guns, and another escort with a gun rode in our van. There were more more military with us than the 8 of us in the van. I thought... where in the world are we going? Second, we were with a Christian tour group, and our guide thought this might be the place where Joseph stored grain before the 7 year famine in Egypt. So, that was interesting along with the pyramid we saw there. The pyramid was flooded, and there was a gate you could look into, but not actually go inside. While we were there, the noon Friday call to prayer went off and a group of women and children started walking across the field to the mosque nearby. Apparently, the military didn't like that they were coming near us and started screaming at them to get away. Again I thought... where in the world are we? I have no idea if this is an area of terrorism threat or not, but the military sure acted like it was. Other than going to Abu Simbel, this is the only other area during our whole trip that we had military escorts. The whole experience was definitely memorable.
