Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is my home town. When we went there the first time I didn't expect much but then I read the famous book "The Alchemist" & I actually went there.
I would say the government REALLY should take more care of this BEAUTIFUL & historical city. It has TONS of attractions but unfortunately even the Egyptians themselves they don't recognize it. They even destroyed the farms to build on top of it after the so called "Revolution" which is probably the worst thing EVER happened to this town.
If you want to see the REAL Egypt Past & Present you should visit this city.
But you MUST have a GOOD Egyptian friend with you.
Other then the cleanness & organization of this city... It's just wonderful & I am SOOOOO proud to say I am from there

There is no need to see this "landmark", dirty water, no real place to stop and see, just not worth the time.

These water wheels are really something from the past. They use something called Aadous to carry the water up.
They disappeared in all of Egypt except here, and they the only ones that still move water in the very old traditional way.
There more than 20 of them allover Fayoum area, but you have to be very patient to find them, as the locals usually tell you about those known to the tourists.
Next to the large ones in the center of Fayoum, you can ask about the Carpenters who make them. You might be lucky to take one home with you.

If so, Medinet el-Fayyum has 11 of them in two lots.
One set of 4 is in the centre of town near a café area, the other 7 are along a Tourist Walk in the Bahr Sinnuris
To be honest, I found the 7 disappointing and all of them a lot smaller than I expected after seeing those near Homs in Syria!
But they are free to go a have a look at.

A nice bit of Desert Oasis history to stop and view IF you’re in the specific Fayoum area, but IF not, a side trip isn’t needed.
