This is Mackinac Island State Park, a landscape characterized by high limestone bluffs, beautiful vistas of sparkling water, vibrant forests, and mystical geological formations. With automobiles banned since 1898, here exists a quieter way of life away from interstate noise of cities. Over 80 percent of Mackinac Island is within Mackinac Island State Park—free of charge and open year round—where you’ll discover the true natural gems of Mackinac. Whether visiting this island parkland by foot, bike, horseback, or carriage, these many majestic geological wonders and unique historical monuments are visual treasures found only here—on the island sacred to the Ojibwa and Odawa Great Lakes Indian tribes. According to them, this is where life began. You’re invited to discover why.

We enjoyed a day on Mackinac island and I can recommend the park. Simply beautiful and we had no idea it existed until friends living in Michigan suggested we take a visit. Easy to access, lots of trails and history here.

Would definitely recommend hiring bikes to cycle around the island. It's 8 miles in total and is so beautiful. We hired bikes for an hour then hiked up through the park. It's surprisingly hilly so be prepared but the views are worth it.

Loved biking through the park. Beauty everywhere! And a nice 8 mile jaunt is really enjoyable, nicely active, but not difficult, as it's quite a flat terraine around the island. But you look up to gorgeous and steep bluffs.

My husband and I explored the park on horseback and it was wonderful riding all the trails that bisect the wooded park. The trails are also used for biking and hiking. Lots of interesting historic sites in the park and some beautiful scenic spots to look over the water.

We didn't realize how much of this island was state park. The fall was the best time to go for for the first time - the leaves were beautiful and we hiked for hours without seeing more than one or two people. The trails were well marked with some paved and the option to go off pavement if desired. This... More

Lovely lakeside route around the island that is ideal for cycling, about 8 miles on flat roads with no traffic, there are some routes into the middle of the island to explore around the airfield and scenic spots along with much history attached. A great way to spend a few hours

I've been to Mackinac Island many times as a kid and later as an adult, and it still is beautiful and leaves me awed. On this last trip, my husband and I rode bikes around the perimeter of the island (with our baby in a bike trailer), and we also walked the interior of the island (those hills are rough... More

Everyone should experience a couple nights on the island, its beautiful, peaceful and helps you relax. There's no bar scene, or huge attractions but if you're looking for some place to take the kids to just hang out and enjoy the outdoors, the history and each other? This is the place.
