Last saturday we visited Geofort in Herwijnen. After turning of highway A27 we where pleasantly surprised by the beautiful scenery heading to the fort. Entering the fort we noticed the detail with which the fort has been restored to its old luster. Incoporating modern design and comfort along the way.
The fort museum has a lot to offer. Not only about the old dutch defence structures (waterlinie), but also about geografy, physics and currently a Mindcraft treasure hunt.
My kids loved it (age 10, 8 and 3) and the visit to the playground.
If you want to enjoy an entertaining day with your kids and see some of the back country along the dutch riversystem I recommend you visit Geofort.

We had an enjoyable day out - despite very wet weather - with an 8 year old and 2 adults.

The museum is themed around geography, maps etc. and draws on a lot of interactive exhibits and modern technology to create an enjoyable experience particularly for kids.

The museum is in an old fort and is somewhat of a maze, with lots of different spaces and rooms creating a very tempting series of places for kids to run to. Because it is very interactive parents can find themselves being pulled from one interactive thing to another and missing more of the actual content.

Particular favorites of ours included the Minecraft room, the elevator to the centre of the earth and the sand pit with light effects where you could create a working volcano. The earthquake simulator was also fun.

Although the museum does have multiple languages on the exhibits most of the obvious display is in Dutch and you sometimes have to search for the smaller font English.

Good cafe with a good selection of food and craft beers.

Interesting concept, but far from being 'the best children museum in the world'. Most attractions are in Dutch, difficult to translate to smaller kids. Also, I am disappointed by the lack of communication on how to get there by public transport. We spent hours on the way, not knowing that you needed to book the bus in advance. Not all attractions were functional. So, not worth the time.

Do you want to spend a day out and about with your family? Consider this museum, situated in a century-old fortification. The focal point of this museum is centered around geography in its broadest sense and it contains a lot of activities for children aged 5 - 15. You can build your own structure and test if it's earthquake-proof. You can travel to the core of the earth. Children can roast marshmallows. Visit the map of The Netherlands by raft. There is also a maze and a great playground.

It is a bit of a drive but a great destination! They are currently expanding.

Today with our children (7&9) to Geofort. Very nice experience centre. Outside and inside a good mixture of activities. The restaurant was nicely decorated and the good was tasty. We will come back again!

This museum was recently voted as the best children's museum in the world. We enjoyed our visit. An old fortress was turned into a museum, nice lay-out that included both indoor and outdoor activities. There was also a restaurant for refreshment but felt that the menu did not really match with a children's museum. Great day out, can highly recommend the museum when looking for a day out with primary school aged children!

Old fortress transformed into education & fun park, really well done, and in further development. Among the highlights: local history (explanation of the functioning of this fort, and the system of forts arround) and reality (NL water line), Earth history (a big model of the Earth where you interactivelly observe the changes on the surface of the planet from the beggining till now), bulding wooden houses and test their earthquake safety (fun!), testing sense of orientation (underground tunnel between the former ammunition storages) and smelling (quite big labirynth where you have to follow a certain smell - really great idea and realisation), geomedia-based games where you detect e.g. landuse changes, bad railway tracks, another really funny - learning cartographic projections based on photos of individual visitor's face (you can send your carographically transformed faces to your email); each participant can make a simple compass; a treasure-hunt-like game all over the area - using iphones (borrowed from the Geofort) for virtual-reality-search of virtual boxes (seen only on the phone) with questions - and our answers have been collected - to be overviewed later in a class; a small "adrenaline park" for kids and adult kids as well; there are some activities especially for the kids, and a few sheep observing the visitors all over the Geofort.
