A silent and majestic sentinel, the Waugoshance Lighthouse marks the western entrance to the straits of Mackinac. Thousands of sailors and freighter captains have used Waugoshance to mark their arrival in the straits of Mackinac for business, sport and leisure. Latitude: 45.8101Longitude: -85.1324This treacherous area of Lake Michigan was the location of the first wood lightship stationed on Waugoshance Shoal in 1832. In 1851, the Lighthouse Board decided to replace the lightship with Waugoshance Lighthouse. The Waugoshance Lighthouse is best viewed by boat or from the air. Waugoshance Shoal and the waters surrounding the light are treacherous. Only distant views are advisable by boat, helicopter or plane.
