Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Our daughter and her family visited us from the USA and they have a 3 year old and 10 month old. We parked on the south side where the “lazy river” flows through the sand out to sea. It is a perfect place for little kids to play. We made sand castles and enjoyed looking for shells. The sand is so soft on little feet. The cafe is nice and it’s not so crowded. Highly recommended!

We have had many trips to Redhead Beach over the years, and recently the carpark was full at 7:20am! The cliffs make the northern end deliver shade during the day and the southern end has a large section for dogs to play.

This is a massive beach. Patrolled and open it is a quintessential East coast Australian beach. Don’t swim if you’re unfamiliar with surf swimming.

A very large portion of Redhead Beach is dog off leash. I was thrilled to have a wonderful playground to socialise, swim and frolic with my dog.

I just want to start by saying 95% of the people there were great and the area is beautiful.
There was 10 plus p platers continuously driving up and down the beach recklessly until almost midnight. I get it there young and have excess testosterone floating around there man child body's which needs to be burnt off, however there was no regard given for the majority of people who were there to camp and 4wd responsibly.
I was lying in my tent with my two young boys until about midnight just waiting for one of these baboons to loose control and plough through mine or someone else's camp site. It wasn't until one of the 95% lolst it and told them to shut it down that it stopped. I'm sure this is as extreme as it gets but I won't be rushing back anytime soon.

This is a great place to let your dog run wild and free! Nice beach to walk or swim in the flagged area at the north end.

Fantastic spot but the signage is poor for visitors. Technically there is no access from the Surf Club car park up to $1100 fine and from Webb park it is a bit of a walk. Direct access is from Cain Street Carpark northern point of Dog Exercise area and Southern end of Cain Street Duck Pond path (about mid point of Dog Exercise Area). Need to keep dogs on lead until you reach the beach but then it is fun time. Don't forget the poo bags

Even though it was winter when we were there, people are swimming, kids are in the small pool formed by the creek, walkers, some with dogs, some without are strolling along the beach and the occasional runner passes you by. Lovely community feel the ocean on one side dunes on the other and some expensive houses are on top of Redhead Bluff.
Came here hoping to spot some passing whales, unfortunately none on the day, stayed and had lunch at the cafe that is part of the lifesaving club.
Good solid waves on the day which local surfers were enjoying, Swimmers were staying close to shore as there are no life guards in winter.
The beaches in the Newcastle area are all good. Some places are more popular than others, Redhead is a bit of a hidden gem.

Hi, I have read on a few different websites that you are allowed to take a 4x4 and camp on the beach, I was just wondering if anyone can tell me if it is possible to camp without a 4x4, ie is there a car park where you could park your car then walk with the camping stuff to the beach to camp? Or are there designated camping spots which you can only get to with a 4x4? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks

Great thank you for letting me know, saved me a long walk!
Written 8 December 2019
absolutely! that's why we love it.
The beach is divided into several parts:
a) swimming between the flags (near the surf club house)
b) dog ON-leash area (between 'first' and 'second' creeks)
c) a huge dog OFF-leash area just perfect for running, jumping, throwing the ball, jumping in the water etc - dogs LOVE it.
d) a large camping area which then extends all the way to Blacksmiths beach.
