The last time I went to Purgatory Chasm was about 40+ years ago. Given that it was made by the receding glacier, not much has changed! Its a great place for a hike, not too long, well maintained, weird crazy rock outcroppings and little cavelettes...More

Our whole group enjoyed this hike thru the rocks. We had kids ranging from 6-14 and all enjoyed and felt comfortable walking thru and on the rocks. Took about 1.5 hours and that’s with a couple of stops for pictures and a water break!

This hike was amazing. It's not very long, but you can go down the chasm and back up and around either side. There are a few smaller trials around it as well. Nice outdoor area! No fees during off season.

The chasm itself is a marvel and worth a trip. The surrounding trails are nice, but nothing out of the ordinary – although they do have a nice Maine vacation feel. Also the parking is free before May 26th which is nice. Bring good footwear,...More

Picnic tables, many hiking paths and areas to explore, maps available, clean restrooms, grills throughout, ice cream truck on-site, and dogs are welcome to join the walk! Beautiful outdoor park for a full day of exploring.

Went out here on a Sunday morning with friends. Great couple of hours walking almost all the trails. This is a lovely local gem.

You need to be in shape to go through the trails. Lots of ups and downs. Very high cliffs and deep valleys.

Many different activities for all levels. Hiking trails outside the chasm or walk through the chasm. Lots of nooks & crannies to find as you walk through the chasm. At the end, continue walking into the woods to find the waterfall. They also have a...More

If you googled your question... you would probably get your answer there in more detail. It was beautiful and interesting.. it was a natural chasm , not man made! That’s all I know... I was there to hike.

FYI.. The outer trails are always open in nice weather. The chasm is closed for the season and will reopen in April I believe. Of course it is always weather dependent for safety issues. I hope this helps.
