This Oak Bluffs beach and surrounding area of colorful gingerbread Victorian houses have strong links to African-American heritage on Martha's Vineyard, dating back to the Revolutionary War. The beach was the setting for a teenage romance movie called "The Inkwell."

Apparently a must visit for African Americans to understand some of the history of slavery as the Inkwell was where their predecessors bathed.

The Inkwell is just one of those places you must go. The history surrounding this beach is a big draw. It's a sliver of a beach to be sure; you have to get there early to snag a great spot. Fortunately there are several staircases...More

We were at the beach every day. Surprised that the beach is not as sandy as I would have expected. Lots of seaweed, shells and rocks. Walking on the beach without shoes can be painful. Great view. Peaceful and tranquil. A block from our hotel.

The beach was a little rockier than I am accustomed to, however I highly recommend a visit. I did find the water to be very clear and a little chilly.

The Inkwell is a great place to meet people and socialize with friend. It's poppin all day into the evening. The sand is awful. Impossible to walk on without shoes or sore feet
