I have loved this trail since it opened. It's perfect for a walk or run - with or without your four-legged friends - almost any time of year. You get beautiful views, close-ups with amazing creatures like eagles and ospreys, and a healthy dose of sunshine. It's a long enough trail that you can spend plenty of time out there, but not so long that families with young kids can't enjoy. I've always felt relatively safe even alone, and generally cross paths with at least a handful of friendly folks.

This is an easy walk for all ages with a close-up view of the wetlands/Chesapeake Bay tributaries. The boardwalk is new and easy. You will see lots of water-life and birds. The day we were there we were treated to a bald eagle flying over head and then perching up in a tree not too far away. As a kid, my mom told me stories of taking the train to Chesapeake Beach and it was really cool to see the old railroad tracks along the way.

This trail starts right behind the parking lot behind the Marina located in Chesapeake Beach. It's also behind the Water Park. As soon as you pass the Water park heading northbound, take the road between the Water Park and the convenience store/gas station and follow that road to the back most end of the parking lot. Head towards the creek (Fishing Creek) and you'll see the beginning of the boardwalk trail. It follows Fishing Creek and has historical and nature interpretive signs along the way (every 100 yards or so). When you get to the "T" intersection - head left. A right turn will take you to a bunch of apartments. Having made the left turn, the boardwalk/trail takes you over Fishing Creek to the other bank and now you will be following the old train bed that went all the way to Washington, D.C. over a 100 years ago. When you see trees on the right hand side, you may want to search in the wooded area here. This was a dump stop for the trains before coming into Chesapeake Beach. The train line was disbanded in 1935. You can find many old bottles - some still intact along here. The trail ends at a raised platform overlooking Fishing Creek. You can see the train bed continue on the other side of the creek. And if you look down at the very end of the platform, you can see the remains of the old creek crossing trestle - just under the water. Scenic trail - a good way to spend the day!

So the trail is very flat and paved the entire way. It splits at the half way point so you will need to back track to walk both sections. There are wooded areas that you walk through, however the mosquitos were really bad. I would difinitly suggest putting on some bug spray to save your yourself from being eaten alive. I saw several small dirt paths off of the trail, however due to the mosquitos, we did not attempt to try them. Nice relaxing walk and to stop and view the wetlands and wildlife.

The trail consists partly of a new boardwalk next to Fishing Creek on the left (as you head out) and marshland on the right. The trail splits where it crosses the creek. If you walk to the left, you'll cross the creek and the trail is actually a modern path that follows the old railroad tracks. It stops at a scenic, peaceful bend further up Fishing Creek. If you turn right, the path/boardwalk takes you past some homes then over more marshland and into some woods, and it deadends at another housing development. You can get about 2 1/2 miles in if you walk the whole trail and back. There are benches and good signs about local wildlife along the way. Plenty of free parking in second lot behind the Chesapeake Beach Aquatic center. Over the past year I've seen white egrets, ducks, geese, osprey, herons, bald eagles, water snakes, a large water turtle and a beaver!

We are big fans of the Rail Trail. We walk this several times a week. This is an easy walk suitable to all ability levels. One can easily walk, run or bike. The trail starts off the parking lot behind the water park. It can be a bit hard to find at first. Just follow the sidewalk near the townhouses and you will come to the start of the trail. The trail starts with a boardwalk over the shipping channel. Then the trail comes to a T to the right the trail leads through a lovely marsh to a housing development. This trail is boardwalk and paved and a tiny bit hilly. To the left the trail leads through the marsh to a more open area of the creek. At the end of this trail you can watch schools of fish jumping out of the water and keep your eyes open for a variety of birds.
The trail is lovely in the early morning and the evenings just before sunset. But great all day and all year long. If you are in the area and want a nice walk this is the place to go.

We love this trail. Beautiful scenic views. However, most of the parking is reserved for the Rod and Reel since they are renovating their lot. The other parking lot is specifically for the Water Park and boats. We couldn’t figure out where those going on the trail are supposed to park 🤷🏽♀️

Is there parking by/near this trail, and are dogs welcome?
Written 14 June 2019
Are you able to bring dogs on the trail?
Written 24 February 2019
Yes, I saw people with dogs on trail. And there are 'pickup' bag stations.
Written 25 February 2019
Yes, but really only near the end of the trail - where there is an overlook platform/observation deck looking over Fishing Creek. May want to bring a flashlight with you though as it is about a mile and a half to 2 miles to the observation deck and you may be walking back in dim light
