A beautiful historic site to visit and it's free. It is well maintained. It's a great place to wander, with a nice sandy beach and a rocky area to explore at low tide.

Free to visit and wander through the nicely maintained ruins. Gives an idea of the conditions in which soldiers and milicia lived in this stategic defense fort.

Beautiful, serene spot on the beach (prior to tourist season). One of our favorite spots on our trip. Fort wasn't open when we arrived, but were able to get all of these great photos.

There are three forts right in the same vicinity. Fort Popham is open and accessible with lots of placards explaining how the fort was built and what its intended purpose was. It was fun to explore the two floors and see where the cannons would...More

My fiance had never been to Maine and I knew this was a place I needed to take him to see while we were there. He enjoyed the history information, as well as seeing seals in the water and enjoying the beautiful weather.

Really cool fort. Great historical site with a fantastic view. Love the stone architecture and going up in the tower. You can go for a walk on the beach after.

We were directed here by a local in Bath and it was worth the drive out. Interesting structure with cool history. It is located on a pretty spot where the Kennebec River dumps into the ocean. Great beach nearby.

We explored the old fort on Labor Day weekend. we really enjoyed exploring the yard, reading the historical information, and marveling at the way the stones were set to support each other. Sitting right on the beach, we were able to take a long walk...More

By all means. This park is at the end of the road, so park near by, and walk to wherever you feel would be a good night-time shot of the fort. Some fascinating history with this place.

Phippsburg is further south- it is a finger into the Atlantic just below Bath(Bath Iron Works; Maine Maritime Museum). If you are travelling from Portland, it takes about an hour to get here. Travel time from the above would... More
