An easy ramble along the water with great views. Good for children. But be sure to time your visit to avoid high tide or you will have to wade to reach the island. Not to be missed on Deer Isle if you enjoy outdoor activities.

The Barred Island preserve is one of the best walking trails and unique walks around . If is good for all except for really young and quite old. Excellent views native plants, trees, mosses and more. Don't try to bike or take a stroller. Enjoy !!!

Time your visit to coincide with low tide and there's a great sand beach between the shore and the island. Classic Maine views. Took way too many pictures.

What a beautiful place. I truly enjoyed the hike through the magical forest out to the sand bar. If you time the tide correctly, there are many lovely shells and seaside to be observed on the sand bar. Listening to the many bird calls here made me want to take up residence here. Visit - you will really enjoy it,... More

We drove from our Inn and found the place with no effort. The hike to the sand bar is through a moss covered forest floor. The bed or moss undulates and folds and the light slips through the trees making it a magic place. I kept looking for the fairies. We really wish we had our grandchildren with us to... More

But wear good shoes as there are a lot of roots on the path. I even used my walking stick. The scenery is beautiful.

Went on Sept 14th at low tide. Wore swimsuits so could take a swim in the ocean off the sandbar. A lot warmer than usual but for my friend it was too cold. Just perfect way to end the day on perhaps the last day of summer weather. The hike has lots of mossy woods to look at, a few... More

Barred Island is accessible from the Nature Trail that is about a 1 mile loop. Right outside the trail is a sign that lists the time of low tide. The island is accessible for about 3 1/2 hours after low tide. After that the little beach that leads you to the island is covered in water. The island itself is... More

Today's walk was a highlight of our trip. Beautiful 1.5 mile hike through the trees. Mostly flat with tree roots. Amazing view from the lookout. But the view of the water from the sand bar and rocks at the end is spectacular. Go when tide is low so can walk to the island.

It is definitely a moderate level hike but you'll see things that you can't see any other day. Stop by the office en route for map and for unique souvenirs (we got 2 original watercolors).
