The exhibits at the Castine Historical Society help bring the rich history of Castine to life. The permanent collection includes "The Penobscot Expedition", a multi-media presentation and display about the 1779 naval battle between the British and Colonial forces. Learn about the battle's disastrous outcome for the Americans and the controversial role Paul Revere played during this battle. The Society also hosts temporary exhibits on topics of Castine history drawing from it's vast collections. Special town historic walking tours are held Saturday mornings in July and August or can be arranged for groups with pre-booking. The Society is open from early June - Columbus Day. Researchers may access the archives by appointment throughout the winter

Thanks so much for your review. You are right that small Castine played a big role in our nation's history in the American Revolution. The Penobscot Expedition is one of America's greatest naval defeats up until Pearl Harbor.

Outstanding exhibits. Well done and very informative about this history of this fascinating village. Take time to enjoy the video about the Penobscot Exposition, the largest navel disaster in US history until Pearl Harbor.

What is superior about the Historical Society is its use of history in a way that ties the past to the present. The exhibits do not point back to another age with nostalgia; instead, they show how an earlier practice, event or relationship has led...More

I always enjoy the exhibits at the Castine Historical Society, but this year's exhibit was superb. It just opened the door to the past in such a meaningful and lively way.

Thanks so much! This season's exhibit is a continuation of "Castine's Devoted Women." There will be an emphasis on the many other women who made a difference in people's lives besides Molly Dewson and Polly Porter. Hope you will visit again!
