The tree canopies in Fort Williams Park were finally full and a beautiful green, and there were spring flowering shrubs everywhere along the walking paths. I took several photos from different trail vantage points on the last day of May, which was warm and sunny with a nice breeze. This is such a beautiful park, and the Portland Head Light is the icing on this cake.

Views are amazing! Took plenty of photos and videos, went early to avoid crowds. Peaceful, the opening to get to the rocks is now fenced off but you can still get a great view.

If you are in the area, consider stopping by Fort Williams park for some of the best views! We expected to see a nice view of the lighthouse, but this was so much more! Could have spent all day here.

Cape Elizabeth, Maine is home to Fort Williams Park and Portland Head Light.

So history: constructed in 1787 and served through both World War I and World II, Fort Williams was finally decommissioned in 1962. Fort Williams and the surrounding acreage were purchased by the Town of Cape Elizabeth just two years later, in 1964. The former army post is now home to a 90-acre park featuring picnic facilities.

small trail- the Cliff Walk begins (or ends, depending on where you start) at Portland Head Light. The .4 mile, one-way gravel trail is rated "easy", Views of Ram Island Ledge Light and Casco Bay Islands can be seen on a clear day.

The park includes picnic sites, grills, playing fields, tennis courts, a playground, a beach, sledding hills, historic buildings, and the oldest lighthouse in Maine. It is open year-round, from sunrise to sunset. Dogs are allowed on leash, aside from designated off-leash sections.

Pros: This is a beautiful park with lots of walking trails, ruins to poke around, a beautiful lighthouse and great views. This would be a great spot for a picnic on a nice day. Cons: There is a lot of parking but you have to pay for it (and on a crowded day I don’t think there would be enough spots). This fort was a military installation for a long time, but there is nothing to really describe the history (you can buy a book in the museum shop if you want the history). The remaining gun emplacements have been stripped of everything and I don’t think a young person would even know what they were. Buildings were razed. What a shame. It would have been nice if the military aspect of the fort had been better preserved and turned into a museum. The lighthouse museum was closed when we went and I don’t think you can go into the lighthouse in any event.

This huge park has a lot to see: Portland Head Light (Maine’s oldest lighthouse and one of the most photogenic), fort remains, a cliff walk, food trucks… Be sure to walk the cliff trail north and south of the lighthouse so you can get the best pictures. Also, there’s a great little lighthouse museum inside of the old lighthouse keeper’s house, worth seeing but it has very limited hours.

Be aware that only one of the two gates into the park is actually open, but Google Maps doesn’t know this, so it may guide you to the locked gate and you’ll have a very long walk into the park. When we were there, only the northern entrance gate was open.

One of my family's favorite spots in Maine. Beautiful scenery, the Children's Garden is amazing and we love the history of Fort Williams. It's also super fun for the kiddos being able to walk through some of old fort ruins. Great place for a family picnic or grab lunch at the food truck!

What a difference three months makes since my last visit. The park was packed with tourists on a beautiful mid-June day. The beach roses were in bloom and the lobster food truck (Bite Into Maine) had dozens of people in line. The views were magnificent.
