About
Mount Battie and its hundred-year-old tower is the highest point of Camden Hills State Park. You can reach the summit by following a 1.2-mile winding trail through the forest, where you'll be treated to commanding views of Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay, especially from the top of the tower. Try to spot Mount Battie and the tower along a cruise tour of Maine's coast. While you're there, Camden Hills State Park is also great for hikes along its 25-mile trail system, mountain biking, and horseback riding, as well as snow sports in the colder months. You can even camp overnight. – Tripadvisor

- VascosiriusPlymouth, United Kingdom75 contributionsStunning viewsWe hiked to the top of Mount Battie from the first car park after the entrance to the park. There was a toll booth to pay on entering the park. It was an hour’s hike to get to the top from there at a steady pace. The woods were beautiful at this time of year, October, with fall colours starting. The trails were well signed and there were interesting leaf recognition signs along the way. There are restrooms and plenty of car parking space at the top so you don’t need to hike up. There are great views of Camden and of the surrounding islands.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 October 2023
- napagirl2New York City, New York346 contributionsBeautiful view from the topIf you are not a hiker like myself, you can still enjoy the beauty of Mount Battie. You can drive to the top. There is plenty of parking. If you would like to return the same day, just hold onto your receipt and you can come back at any time. Reminded me of a mini Cadillac mountain. Breathtaking views from the top.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 June 2024
- Della NBangor, Maine85 contributionsNatural Maine beautyBeautiful area that isn't too busy with tourists in the summer months. Some decent trails and beautiful views. It's a shirt drive up and back down ( about 1/2 mile) and easy enough to walk up the main road or hike one of the trails up. There's a lookout tower but unfortunately, you can go in/on it as there's work be done around it so it's closed for the summer.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 July 2024
- gethealthy2017New London, New Hampshire5 contributionsBeautiful vista pointthe views from the top are gorgeous. We were disappointed that the Tower is closed this summer but there are many other places where we were able to enjoy those breathtaking views. It was cloudy the morning we were there and that added another dimension of beauty to our visit. We will definitely be going back once the work on the Tower is completed, and will take a nicer camera to capture the beauty of the top of Mt Battie.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 28 August 2024
- houstontravelingfoolHouston, Texas3,911 contributionsBeautiful viewsWhat a great view of Camden and the surrounding area. Since we're seniors, we only had to pay $2 a person for the drive to the top. Well worth it. It was a clear and beautiful day so the views were lovely. You can walk around and see different views - or just sit on some of the larger rocks and relax. So glad we did it.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 August 2024
- Marty BielickiStuart, Florida15,594 contributionsA Few Tips About Mount BattieThe 26th foot high Mount Battie Tower can be seen from downtown Camden. This 1921 Tower is today part of Camden Hills State Park which is 2 miles north on US1 from Camden. The cost to enter the State Park is $6. Driving distance from the parks entrance to the top of Mount Battie is less than 4 miles. There is a walking trail that is ranked as moderate. Regardless if you drive on trek, the vistas from Mount Battie are superb. The entire coastal area of Camden can be observed as well as the expanse of Penobscot Bay. Historically, there was a house which turned into a recreation center in 1899. A Carriage Road was developed for visitors. By 1920 the complex was torn down, partly due to a devasting fire in the area. In 1921, the 26th foot stone structure was put in place to commemorate those who were part of WWI. There is a plague on front of the tower that reads: “In grateful recognition of the services of the men and women of Camden in the World War, 1914-1918. At the time of our visit the Tower was being refurbished. In his latter years, Teddy Roosevelt even climbed around Mount Battie. Camden Hills state Park does have 30 miles of trails and 5 trail heads. There is also camping. Great for hikers or non hikers. You can hike the summit or drive up the road. It was $6.00 per adult but well worth god the view of Penobscot Bay. Just something beautiful to see.

Beautiful views from the top of Mount Battie!! You are able to drive to the top of the mountain (small fee per person) and there is ample parking at the top of the mountain. Two easily accessible overlooks to choose from. The overlook on the left has the better views in my opinion. You are able to see much further to the left and still see the beautiful town and harbor of Camden down below!! This is definitely a must-see spot if you are in the area!!!

Mt Battie is easily accessible with beautiful views. It is only $6 for out of state reisdents, and free for in-state residents.
The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that I've been to Cadillac Mtn in Bar Harbor, which has so many more and varied islands to view and closer that it is head and shoulders above this one in terms of epic scenery.

We drove to the top and the $12 fee ($6 pp) is outrageous for starters and so not worth it. The road getting up there is in very poor condition and we almost did damage to our car. Aside from potholes there are high humps in the pavement where if you’re not very careful you can damage the underside of your vehicle. Forget even going if you have a low car/spoiler. You will damage it no doubt. If you’re going to charge a fee, make it per vehicle and not per person, and for God sakes fix the road!

Mt Battie is part of Camden Hills State Park. There is a $6 fee per non state resident to access the mountain road. It is well worth the money. The views of Camden harbor and Penobscot Bay are spectacular.

Would recommend anyone visiting Camden to at least drive up Mount Battie. It is worth the $5 per person (maybe $6 - I cannot remember which) to enter the "park." The views at the top are nice.

Mount Battie is a State Park that has amazing views. Entrance fee is 6$ per person. Drive to the top and enjoy the views, then come back down and drive across the road to the ocean side with beautiful views of waves crashing into the rocks! Pack a picnic and enjoy this peaceful area. There are swings hidden in the lower park side around the bend on the north side.

You can choose to park your car and hike or pay $6 per person to go up and park up the mountain.
Would guess that it takes almost an hour to hike up.
We choose the last option, drive the car up (due to back issues)
Beautiful views!!!

The park is open 9am to sunset unless otherwise noted at the gate. The Mount Battie road from Nov 1st to May 1st depends on weather and staffing. Phone 207-236-3109. More information can be found on the Maine State Government website and searching for state parks.

Yes, fireworks can be viewed from the summit of Mt. Battie. It's a different perspective, looking down rather than up. The fireworks usually are shot from a barge in the harbor - about 1.5 miles from the summit.
We used to allow people to drive to the summit (the road usually closes at sunset) but the number of people and the behavior of a few became unmanageable. Vehicular access ended in 2016.... No good deed goes unpunished best explains the issues park staff faced trying to accommodate over 100 cars in a small area.
You may walk the 1.5 miles (normal use fees apply) and view the fireworks from the summit.

We were planning on hiking Mount Battie with our daughter over the summer. She will be 13 months and in a hiking pack on my back, will it be ok to do?
Written 19 January 2018
The park has over 25 miles of hiking trails. Many have views along the way while some offer easier grades. I'm certain that you'll find a suitable trail. Be sure to ask our staff for their recommendations when you enter the park.

Hi, knose2002. What would you like to know about this attraction? We will be in the area in a couple weeks. Is the road to the top paved? Room to pass on oncoming car? Thank you.
Written 4 September 2017
The road is paved, two-laned and 1.5 miles in length. Tour buses and motorhomes can climb/descend it with no problem.
Written 5 September 2017
Can we hike up the toll road in the winter, or is it off limits to pedestrians? Also, are there sledding hills in the park?
We're planning on being in the area around Christmas and would like to enjoy the park if possible, with young children.
Written 5 December 2016
There is a parking lot so you may always park and hike up the mountain year round. No sledding hills that I know of but the town owns a ski mountain called the snow bowl that you can sled at.
Written 7 September 2017
I should have been more specific - when does the road close for the winter?
Written 29 September 2016
I believe they close it right after thanksgiving. That is when they light up a huge star at the top of the mountain. Not 100% sure though. They may close it after Columbus day.
Written 7 September 2017
We were there Sept 24th and the Park Ranger advised close was 7pm. If you have a car keep this time in mind as you'll pay $6 per person (if you're a non-Maine resident) - we drove in for the sunset and didn't have time to explore anything else.
