We really enjoyed the experience and loved how they incorporated the immigrant experience and how it personalized the history of the mining industry. It was very informative about the history of coal mining as well.

I knew going in that this was more staged. It is a lot like a Disney World Exhibit, only at a real former mine. It was informative. The tour lasted about 40 minutes and did give an idea of what miners faced in the early...More

My family and I visited Portal 31 today. Very glad we did. I learned much about coal mining and the area I had never known. Take the time to read the time line display before the tour. The staff was very friendly and the price...More

Exploring an old coal mine sounds interesting, but this is a hard to explain site. The "tour" takes you about 150 yards into the mine, stopping 4 or 5 times to listen to recorded miner mannequins highlighted by a small light. The tour seemed to...More

Very interesting tour with a lot of rich history. Had no idea the tour would be all automated and done with animatronics. The tour guide was a nice young man who was very knowledgeable on mining and the history area overall. Unbelievable that such a...More

Portal 31 provides a unique experience as you ride into the mine on the same car miners rode more than a half-century ago. It's an engaging tour that brings this part of our country's history to life. I highly recommend it. A bonus: in the...More

I was hesitant to enter a mine for a half hour tour due to a bit of claustrophobia but this is not in a cramped closed environment. You ride in a rail car on a track but there is plenty of open space around you....More

We have seen pictures, we have seen movies, we have read about it, but we never enjoyed a tour through a mine highlighting its past from the beginning to the end. The tour takes approx 40 min. It's a constant 52 degree in the mine,...More

Although I wish the tour were longer and went deeper into the mine, it was surprisingly informative and well done. It brings home to you the fact that coal mining was an honorable profession in which good, hard working men tried to support and better...More
