About
Situated 8km from the village of Bredbo, Macenmist Black Truffles & Wines offers you the chance to explore the hidden delights of the Perigord black truffle. Come and join the team at Macenmist where you will be able to experience something exciting and unique. Forsty winter mornings herald the ripening of the underground truffles and visitors are encouraged to rug-up and venture out with the truffle dogs as they hunt for the elusive black gold. When a truffle is found it is extracted from its subterranean home in true archaeological style using small tools and brushes. After the hunt it's back to the truffle shed to warm up while partaking of refreshments and indulging in truffle tasting, lore and mystic. Then if that's not enough... stay for a rustic truffle luncheon OR for those wanting to indulge themselves with more truffle, experience the all day event where the Chef's eclectic and innovative truffle food will tantalise your tastebuds.

An exceptional experience.
Aug. 2019
We visited Macenmist Farm in August while truffles were in season. It is an experience that I would recommend to anyone. We arrived at the farm to be told a bit of the history of why they use dogs to hunt for truffles. Then we were taken on a truffle hunt with one of the dogs. Some of our group had the experience of actually digging the truffle out of the ground. This was followed by a wonderful lunch that had truffles infused in every course and product used.
The owners are very knowledgeable and are willing to share their knowledge. They will soon have a vineyard to accompany the truffle hunting.
Highly recommended.

Truffle hunt and glorious degustation
Aug. 2018 • Friends
Have just spent the most wonderful day at Macenmist. Arrived about 10.30am to friendly greeting by hosts Barbara and Richard, with bottomless tea, coffee and divine Ghluwein made from their harvest. Fabulous farm experience, meet and handfeed the galloway cows, before heading off on a truffle hunt with two amazing truffle dogs doing the hard work, as we learned about truffles and how they are grown and farmed. After finding and digging up a cache, it's back to the farm shed for a loooong, leisurely lunch of between 8-10 courses, depending on whether you count the sorbet. Everything used truffles in clever ways, was just delicious! The format was great, everything cooked in front of us by excellent chef, John, with help from Jackie, Barb and Richard. Wonderful food, prepped using simple kitchen appliances, camp stoves, and a lot of love, care and great conversation. Rolled out the door, full and smug, about 4PM. Foodie Heaven!

Visited a truffle farm - fell in love with the dogs!
Aug. 2018 • Friends
It was a Bank Holiday in NSW, so four young ladies decided to do a road trip to Canberra from Sydney for the long weekend. It all centered around an advertisement in the travel section of the newspaper of a Truffiere called Macenmist in the Bredbo region. We opted for the Truffle Hunt and Lunch Package, and there were no regrets. The owners, Barbara & Richard were warm and welcoming, even to the point of directing us where to park (like air traffic controllers) as if we were VIPs to the farm. (They forgot the red carpet, but I'll let them off!) There was tea and coffee on offer, and although it was only 10am - that's 12pm somewhere in the world - Glühwein was also available which was nice and warming in the Canberra Frost of 6 deg Celsius. We met the local cows, and had a mini-photoshoot whilst we waited for the remainder of the guests/tour group to arrive. We were then introduced to the workers of the farm - Fahren and Tawdiffu, who are the Truffle hunting dogs and taken on a hunt for truffles. Barbara explained every action and process in the hunt, and audience participation was encouraged, along with the opportunity to get some great "behind shots" of people shoving their noses into a dirty hole in the ground to smell the truffles!
After the hunt we (including the dogs) had built up an appetite, and we were not disappointed. A three-course lunch was ready for us, and the whole group of tourists, plus a couple of locals, and my friends and I sat down together like a good ol family get together to enjoy a truffle flavoured lunch. Entree was Truffle Mushroom Soup, Main was Chicken with Truffle Cous Cous and Truffled Honey Carrots, and dessert was Truffle Ice Cream with sponge and Truffle pannacotta. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS. (*Disclaimer if you don't like the taste of truffles - just don't go, please leave the wonderful food for people who do appreciate it). After lunch we had the opportunity to purchase some truffle-related items and ask any further questions of Barbara and Richard. The fun and games were supposed to be over, but we stayed and chatted for about another hour, hearing more stories and taking lots more photos. Being a friend of dogs, I asked Richard about the Border Collies I had seen on their website, which he said were up at the house, and went straight up there to let them out to come and say hello to me. My day had just got unbelievably better than I thought it could.

If you've read this far, you should go and book a tour or a degustation or just decide to visit Macenmist immediately. It was such a wonderful experience made great by a "salt of the earth" couple and such a fun day, you won't regret it. Thanks so much Barbara, Richard, King, Missy, Fahren and Tawdiffu. (From the Sydney girls xxxx)

My best truffle experience yet
Jul. 2018 • Friends
My brunch & truffle hunt experience at Macenmist was one of the best foodie experiences I’ve ever had! Barbara and Richard were wonderful hosts who know everything there is to know about truffle hunting. We enjoyed a delicious truffle brunch with truffles eggs, bacon, croissants and truffle butter before our truffle hunt where we watched their two gorgeous dogs at work finding black truffles. And they did despite the lack of rain making it a tough season. We then watched the truffles being cleaned and weighed. I was especially appreciative The icing on the cake was the chocolate truffle cake they make for my best friend to celebrate her birthday - what an absolutely lovely gesture, one we will never forget.

TRUFFLES NEW FRIEND
Jul. 2018 • Friends
Being our first truffle farm experience, not knowing what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised and amazed at the whole experience.
Greeted by Barbera & Richard with warm tea, coffee & Gluhwein (mulled wine) to start the chilly morning off.
With a brief introduction the the history of truffles, we ventured out to the trees with truffle dog to search for truffles.
Not to be disappointed, after a short walk, the dog started digging, Barbera started smelling & then digging too.
After a little digging, more smelling, the archeologist (Barbera) excavated one small truffle.
This experience continued for nearly an hour, excavating a further two truffles.
Then back to the truffle building to experience a degustation of truffle infused treats, three course meal & wine.
Purchase of truffles was available, including other products made locally.
The buy price was around $2.50 per gram, the real market price was $3 at time of purchase, so good value too if purchasing truffles for home.
Reasonably priced experience that was well worth the days adventure.
Thank you Barbera & Richard for a great day. We’ll be back with other friends

So glad we included Macenmist on our itinerary.
Jun. 2018 • Family
We loved searching for truffles, with the help of the dogs. All members of our party were on their knees smelling, and digging.
Barbara and Richard were so willing to respond to our need for a strict gluten free diet.
We enjoyed talking with them about the truffles, the hazelnuts and sampling the truffle infused homemade icecream. Then we finished with a Macenmist red wine.Wonderful! Thankyou.

Truffle kerfuffle - No! The truffle unruffled.

Understanding truffles and demystifying this amazing treat is what you will enjoy during a visit to Macenmist.
There is an absence of elitism often associated with the hint of truffle and a down to earth, honest appreciation of this glorious food presented with a passion for the delights of truffle hunting and preparation of food infused with this amazing delight.
I spent a morning exploring the beautiful property encased in an early morning mist in the company of Barbara and Benny and their two lagottos (truffle hunting dogs). It was a hands on experience where I was able to be as involved as I wished in the company of other enthusiastic guests for the day.
I recommend this experience to anyone wishing to expand their culinary knowledge. Having said that, I am not a cook but I am a lover of new experiences. Watching the dogs at work, discovering truffles and then enjoying food prepared with this infused delight was a rare and extraordinary experience which I will delight in regularly.

Hands On Truffle Hunting Experience!
Aug. 2017 • Friends
I have been twice now and look forward to going again. You will be welcomed by Barbara and Richard and their two Lagottos (Italian Truffle Dogs) and they will share their knowledge of the Truffle and how to hunt. You get to actually go into the area where the Truffles are found and if you want you can even help dig one out! After that you are treated to a three course delicious meal and most elements contain Truffle. Everyone I went with thoroughly enjoyed themselves and I highly recommend this day to anyone and everyone as both days I have been were very informative and LOTS of fun. Thanks Barbara and Richard for your hospitality :-)

Trufflicious!
Jun. 2017 • Couples
I visited Macenmist last year for a truffle hunt and cooking class, and was not disappointed. I've learned how to cook with truffle properly, courtesy of Chef John, and look forward to regularly visiting Barbara and her dogs at Macenmist to purchase more black truffle to enhance my cooking this truffle season. I'd highly recommend this year's cooking inspiration days this year!

Hunting for Truffle
Aug. 2017 • Friends
This is the second time I have visited. This time I knew what to expect and my experience was much more enhanced with the scent of the truffle. We arrived and were invited to have tea/coffee. Next there was a short film explaining the history of Macenmist, how the truffles are found, cleaned and their uses. We also got to meet the lovely 'truffle' dogs who were absolutely delightful. After the group all had a go getting the truffles, after one of the dogs sniffed it out, we headed back to be shown how to clean weigh and store the truffle. Then it was lunch with each dish infused with truffle. Butter infused with truffle for our bread and also ice cream with truffle. What a fantastic day. Can't wait to go again. Thank you Richard and Barbara and puppies.
