Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's a nice little mountain village that is worth stopping at on your way to somewhere else, for a cup of coffee, lunch, or dinner. The tree is a bonus to the visit: yes, it's a seriously old tree that has withstood the test of time. The thick, rugged trunk is impressive as are the towering branches. It’s directly adjacent to the Megali Vrisi, a water reservoir with small fountains. Also worth the look.

Found up a small hill a short walk from the centre of the tiny village of Krassi is the Platanus Tree, estimated to be over 2400 years old. Next to it is the old (1890) aquaduct. Nice little village and worth the short walk up to the tree. Limited parking along the roadside but it was pretty quiet when we visited in the morning so found a space easily enough. There are a handful of eateries and gift shops on the road too.

The giant plane tree at Krasi is listed as a Monument of Nature by the Greek Ministry of Environment and it is actually one of the oldest and thickest trees in the world. The monumental tree witnessed many historical events and the presence of the famous Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis.

We visited the tree on a tour of the Krasi village it is next to the village's springs. The village when we were there was very quiet and you could hear the goats with bells in the hills

Yes, the tree is seriously ancient, when it was sprouting the Romans ruled the world. The village around it was fascinating but it is just an old tree.

We included this in a trip around the whole area with local driver/guide. It was situated in a lovely square, next to the roman water supply feature. Again, another important place to visit, given its place in Cretan history and beliefs. It would have been an excellent, experience/review but for the many tour parties who thought it was OK to make loads of shrieking noise and pose for group photos of them climbing all over the base of the trunk. Perhaps a little more respect for this site, and an appreciation that others just might like to see the tree as well whilst soaking up the peace and views - you'd have thought! We had a lovely drinks stop too at the base of the tree. The water spring and arches were also very interesting - don't overlook them. There are two good information boards. I could imagine that, at the height of the tourist season, this place would be heaving with people and the views/experience wouldn't be as good. Make it a place to see as part of a general tour of the villages.

Must be the most visited tree in Crete, not including the odd dog! The locals are very proud of their tree but cannot be of the traffic of tour vehicles. The minoan buildings give a nice backdrop but such us the traffic taking photos can be challenging

Krasi was one of the few Cretan villages to survive the Nazi devastation of World War 2. It is on a hill overlooking the Lassithi plain, and is very photogenic. In the centre of the village is a huge 2000 year old plane tree with a girth of 20-24 metres and with its sibling alongside. There is a shop selling local produce opposite, and on a cool Autumn day was kindly providing hot Mountain tea, free of charge, when we visited. The tree is purported to be the oldest in Europe. The walk through the village to the centre is up a slight incline and there is a natural spring running under arches. A delightful peaceful place to visit.

A cafe or restaurant available to enable weary travelers to recover. Fascinating to see such an old tree still surviving. Worth just sitting in the square and people watching.
