My favorite attraction of the past several years. Wild bison, prairies that Gus McCrae rode through, Jeff the great bus driver, tall grass, and lots of wind. Lots and lots of wind. Worth the side trip.

It is a beautiful place to see wild flowers and bison. It is a might long walk so I recommend being prepared for a hike. They do bus tours at 11 a.m. during the week and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. bus tours during the...More

Hi Folks, We took the bus ride out into the middle of the Preserve. It was like going back in time 10,000 years. There were no visible fences and the Bison were in small herds. The wind was blowing across the prairie and the Greater...More

The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is a great stop or destination. Get a feel for life on the prairie as it was 150 years ago.

Way better than dinner and a movie on a Friday night... What a wonderful road trip! We came here just to watch the sunset and it was definitely worth the 3-4 hr drive! Wide open prairie that goes on forever. Bison roaming freely. No one...More

I drove down from Kansas City. I have spent a lot of time visiting Emporia, but never made it over to the Preserve. I'm so glad I went. This place is like a scene out of Dances With Wolves. The views go on forever, an...More

The first sign I saw at this place was a warning about the bison - and how they have trails to avoid them. But seeing the bison should be a highlight. Sending people out on foot seems foolish compared to the safety of a vehicle...More

This ecosystem is subtle, spectacular and invigorating. I just stood up on the bluff, on one of the trails, and found myself absorbing more and more of the experience. I fell in love with the place. Lots to take in. I will come back for...More

What a wonderful way to spend the day. Travel back to the days when the tall grass prairie was intact and stretched as far as they eye could see. Visit the out buildings, house and school. Walk the trails, hear the grasses rustle in the...More

Wow! I'm impressed... We travel to Yellowstone frequently and who knew we had free roaming Buffalo 1.5 hours from the house here in Oklahoma!! We entered via Pawhuska and found the 'Gateway to Tallgrass Prairie.' Expect about a 15 mile ride to the Headquarters Office...More

In what season is the grass tallest ? Is late June an appropriate time to visit?

We were there in February so I can't really answer that question but if the grass is too tall, it would be hard to see the bison. It is a national wildlife refuge, so I am sure if you contact the rangers at the office, they... More
