This small museum of art is a rare treasure in the heart of mid-America. There were a couple of areas closed, prepping for the coming exhibit, so we only viewed the permanent collection. I was shocked to find works by, Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran, Gabriel Rosetti, Thomas Hart Benton, Robert Cottingham, Edward Hopper, Dale Chihuly, Andy Warhol, and... More

We visited on a rainy week day and I think we were the only ones here. Apparently the museum is 2 floors, but there was an exhibit being installed on one of the floors, so we were only able to visit the 4th floor. Yes, I was confused too – there’s only a 3rd floor and a 4th floor…hmmm. Anyway,... More

I visited the Spencer Art Museum on St. Patrick's Day and I had plenty of time to look around as the rest of the world seemed to be at the big parade downtown Lawrence, Kansas. Only the 4th floor was acailable because of new installations on other floors. The art collection I could see was a bit chaotic with not... More

If there was some sort of a design vision in bringing together a hodgepodge of art collected over the centuries and displaying them together, I am not entirely sure what it was. The staff was welcoming, the building was entirely appropriate, but it just seemed as if there was no coherence to the curation of this collection.

The Spencer Museum of Art is a nice place for a visit while in Lawrence. It is just down the hill from the main KU campus and offers a nice selection of art on display.

....by a recent rebuilding of the interior, though the classical exterior still looks like a very suitable temple to art. However, one small niggle - it isn't terribly clear that there is both an upstairs nor how to get to it, though there are lifts and a rather small and insignificant staircase.....but upstairs is where it is all at, not... Lately renovated this museum holds multiple different eras, from early 18th century, through modern and current art as well as older items. Overall it is a great little place well worth stopping at. In additional check the local papers as often they have activities for adults and/or kids

The Spencer has been closed for awhile but has reopened with considerable excitement. And it was worth the wait! It is a wonderful experience and allows the Spencer to show more from its collections in a wonderful environment. Be sure to get by soon.

An interesting collection and well worth a visit. I am guessing way too many people in the area do not realize what a gem they have. Spend an hour or two and take in the other sites around the town.

I enjoy going to art museums and having the opportunity to see art from the past and art from the future. It is located just behind the student union.
