Amazing hidden treasure of antiquity
Aug. 2018 • Friends
On our way from Dedza to Lilongwe we pulled off the major road and travelled along a rough dirt track to a small township. Our guide to look at a very few of the many rock arts spoke very good English and showed us good examples of the two types. The red paintings of the Stone Age hunter gatherer pigmmy peoples were spectacular. The shapes on the large boulders were clear to see in particular the hand paintings and animals. The white paintings of the Chawa group, although more recent were less well preserved and not as easy to make out the shapes.

If you are interested in the Stone Age period the UNESCO heritage site is well worth finding and exploring either for a few minutes or a few days.

I visited this site with my Driver Jason and a local guide we hired from Dedza. It was a wonderful half-day tour from Lilongwe, despite all tour agencies telling me it can't be done in the rainy season - I did it on January 26, 2018. Due to shortage of time + my knee issues, we only did the easiest of all sites - Mphunzi which is about 20 KM from Dedza on the way to Lilongwe. There are about 4-5 rock shelters that are spread over a few KMs and there is one at the top of the hill. If you have time, you can make this a whole day trip and also visit Nanzeze. The tour I did was the cheapest one possible due to hiring my own driver and guide. If you need any other info, feel free to contact me.

A historical site

There are not many world heritage sites in Malawi. This is one of the few. Interesting history. The site seems like it always been, no modern installation to spoil the look.

Stone Age Rock-Art in Malawi
Jul. 2016 • Friends
Two friends and I visited two of the numerous sites of Late Stone Age and Iron Age rock paintings located in the Chongoni Forest Reserve in the Central Region of Malawi. We had a guide who was provided by the Dedza Pottery Shop who was excellent in describing not only the art, but also the history of the surrounding area. The rock paintings are breathtaking when you consider that some of them are possibly over 10,000 years old according to our guide. The Namzeze Site was the most interesting and beautiful. You will definitely will need to have a guide to find the paintings. It is well worth the effort.
