Located only a mile off of I-80, the rock has been repainted yearly since 1999. It's always a moving tribute to our soldiers. Don't go expecting any frills, or even a restroom. It's there as a show of respect and honor.

I was told about this by a fellow veteran at another attraction. I made the side trip to find it and was very moved by it. The artist repaints it annually with new scenes. If you are a veteran, know one, or are related to one it is well worth the trip to this heartfelt tribute.

Decided to add this as a side trip as we rode home from Omaha. I found the rock to be very moving since my father (A Marine) just passed away a few months ago. I have several friends from Minnesota that make an annual motorcycle ride to the rock to see the new artwork. (The rock is repainted each May)... More

Two friends and I were on a cross country drive from Chicago to Concord, CA with very limited time to get to California. We heard about this rock, out in the middle of the Iowa countryside and decided we'd make the detour. We were so glad we did! There are a number of these rocks painted by the same artist... More

The only positive aspect of Freedom Rock is that it's convenient to the road. But otherwise, it's a painted rock. I appreciate that some people choose to honor veterans by painting rocks, and some other people choose to honor veterans by looking at painted rocks, but what it boils down to is: it's just a rock.

Make this a place to stop every summer. Bubba Sorenson is the artist and is amazing! The paintings on the rick change yearly. Always a wonderful tribute to our military. Go, take a moment to reflect!

This is the famous Freedom Rock. The Freedom Rock is a 12-foot-tall boulder located along Iowa Highway 25 near Menlo in western Iowa just south of exit 86 on Interstate 80. The boulder weighs approximately 60 Tonnes. We decided to see it as part of the Fourth of July Celebrations. The artwork is on all fours sided and changes for... More

The original Freedom Rock. Mr. Sorensen has done an outstanding job paying tribute to the men and women of our Armed Services. When I visited, there was one side that was for a Pearl Harbor survivor, which was very cool. It is a quick stop and, literally, right off the side of Hwy 25. There is a little awning where... More

This young man has made a beautiful tribute to our American military heroes! He paints this huge boulder every year for memorial day weekend. It's a real honor to meet him and his family. Hundreds of people come in cars, trucks and motorcycles. It's amazing to be part of. And you can say hi to Reagan his loyal dog. So... More

Was easy to get to off the highway. After reading about the artist,I decided to stay on a journey to see all the Freedom Rocks in the state. This as my first one.
