- TheOExpress🏴🇭🇰Hong Kong, China6,087 contributionsLots to see, not just the lake itself……including the pretty amazing thatched models, rice fields stretching towards the mountains behind and platform huts floating on the lake in which tourists can eat. It’s all pretty basic and not everything is kept up to standard but there is enough here to warrant a trip, especially for kids as they will love the models. Lots more to do earlier in the day as well such a boating and ATVs but we missed those.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 October 2023
- singhasamWeymouth, United Kingdom4,076 contributionsPeaceful lake setting with amazing models.NO visit to the Chiang Mai area would be complete without a visit to this peaceful lake. A simple journey of barely ten miles brings you out to this water attraction where it is possible to drive right round the perimeter of the lake. Its main draw though is for locals who come here in their hundreds to relax and eat a meal in scores of little thatched huts on the lakeside. Food is available for tourists to buy and do the same thing, but I was there purely for sightseeing and there was a lot of that to do. Apart from a walk by the lake it was also possible to go boating on it for a few baht. Perhaps the most striking attraction here are the amazing rice straw figures created on open area. They include everything from elephant and stag figures to bulls, peacocks, wild boar and even giant gorillas that it is possible to climb up a ladder to pose in their hand for a photo. A beautiful spot with quite a variety of things to do and see. Worth a visit.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 9 December 2023

The Huay Tung Tao reservoir is a place where locals go to to relax and spend a leisurely afternoon. You can rent one of the many huts around the perimeter of the reservoir, have a picnic or take pictures with the animal installations. There's not a lot to see or do, but it also means there is an opportunity to slow down. This probably shouldn't be a destination on its own but as a pitstop, it serves its purpose.

It's not far from the city center but it's not that great. It can be very busy. The water is brown and doesn't look so clean. In addition you have to pay an entry fee 5 times more than Thai people. I've found much more interesting place for free.

Grabbed a Grab to this beautiul peaceful lake. Walked around the lake and enjoyed the sights. There are several restaurants along the lake, we just stopped for coffee after our stroll. Bring your walking shoes and camera.

20 min from Chiang Mai, an alternative exit to have a great time.
50 baht/person to enter the park. I recommend you to come by scooter and ride around the lakes. There's food and drink everywhere.
Count approx. 1/2 day

Yet another example in Thailand of dual pricing where foreigners pay more than the Thai's.
When you enter the sign in English says 50baht per person, but if you read Thai, you will see that the price is 20 baht per person (if you are Thai). You will see on your ticket that you have paid the "Foreign Tourist Entry Fee".
This practice is widespread in Thailand. Any place that has a policy of dual pricing based on race should be avoided.

Not more than 10 km out of town, is easily reached by motorbike and for sure worth visiting for. I have been there many times and usually it is very quiet. You can enjoy sitting in one of the wooden huts that are scattered along the lake, having a small meal at reasonable price or a beer, swim in the lake or just look at the mountains

It costs about 160b to go here by Grab and 50b per person entrance. The taxi will probably drop you near the toilet area, you will then have to ask around about the straw hut occupancy or just walk inside one and see what happens.
The staff all speak "English nitnoi" i.e NOT enough to explain much.
We arrived about 11:30am and we couldn't seem to communicate to the staff that we wanted to have a drink first then eat later. So we ordered the food, it was excellent , maybe fish was a little tasteless, but everything was cooked well.
The lake is quite large, maybe a few hundred straw huts surround it. These huts on one side and the mighty Doi overlooking it, make here a very picturesque place.
You climb up 2 easy steps from dry land and the rest of the hut is over the edge of the lake. The water is murky, but the local kids loved swimming in it. The huts are small but adequate, maybe 4 is the optimum number. You can sleep after the meal. Where we were there are plenty of shade, toilets, staff were sometimes missing particularly when I wanted to pay the bill.
It is all enjoyable, very exotic to foreigners. With good food and drink.
There are wifi signs but I saw no connection. I think there is a 500b minimum food bill at weekends and public holidays but the English was not very comprehensible.
The phone signal is good, you can easily call nearby Grab drivers after your meal, if you don't have your own transport.
A driver was waiting in the Lake area, but it's a little difficult explaining your location sometimes.
Its much nearer ChiangMai that I expected, its really on the outskirts of the city at the bottom of the Doi overlooking ChiangMai. Its very easy to go there with Grab, make sure your phone is charged!
I don't know if you can leave the hit and return, maybe they call police and say you didn't pay.
Inside the hut, there are 2 straw mats on the bamboo lat flooring. 2 low tables and benches to sit. Sleeping is ok

This is a lovely lake and picnic spot located in a picturesque setting at the foot of Doi Suthep.on the shores of the lake are many groups of thatched huts with eating platforms serviced by the many small Thai restaurants who take orders and deliver food and drink to you. Most of the food is delicious. If you are game try the "dancing prawns", tiny live prawns pit into a jar of nam Jim and shaken to cook. When you take off the lid they jump out and dance about. Call the RSPA!
You can swim the muddy lake, float on hired rubber tubes or rent "swan" peddle boats to navigate the lake. Or just relax, eat and drink and enjoy the scenery. So peaceful and only 20 minutes from the heart of Chiang Mai.

My boyfriend has his leg in a cast. Will it be difficult for him to get there? We just want somewhere we can sit for a while
Written 16 February 2019
We rode out there on a scooter, rode right round the Lake then ate in one of the cafes on stilts over the water. It is close to town so it wouldn’t cost much to get there by tuk tuk. We were there on a weekday so it was quiet but I imagine at the weekend it is busy. Sitting in one of the cafes was very peaceful and quite suitable to sit and wipe away the time.

Hi!
Does anyone know, or has been to the lake in February? How does the scenery look like? Trying to see some rice fields, but I know it's off the season for it, so I don't know what to expect.
Thanx!

I’m here right now. It’s the first week in Jan. It is very pleasant.

I've been several times and chosen not to swim, as I don't know what's in the water. As the other poster said, locals quite happily swim there.

Is it possible to camp here at the lake?
Written 25 June 2017
Contrary to the above, it can be popular but it is never "very crowded." I go here twice a week.

Does anyone know if it's possible to bring my water submersible metal detector to look for dropped jewelry where people swim? I'll have it with me in Thailand because I'm spending a few days at one of the islands doing that.
Written 21 December 2016
Hi,
be aware that due to Bouddhist spirit, you are not owner of nature and I would not recommend to expose yourself in digging ground to collect items your metal detector may have noticed.

Hi! Are there any halal food options near the lake?
Thanks
Written 10 November 2016
hello, so sorry for late revert.
It's rare find for halal food around the area, so i will recommend you to bring your own food OR/ if you are not that strict on it, you can order the papaya salad(i think thats the safest, seafood fried rice or even steam fish/ seafood) near the lake~ if not you can just have some drinks and chill around the lake area (: it's awesome season now!

It is not 20bht entrance if you are falang. Entrance for Johnny Foreigner is 50bht.
