Pilot Knob is a wonderful place to drive thru, take horses on trails, walk trails or check out the tower that over looks the beautiful area that goes on for miles. Has a lodge for picnics with a fireplace (so relaxing) or an amphitheatre for wedding. This place is a must stop!!

We arrived just after a near record amount of rainfall in the area. Many waterways were out of their normal banks. However, this park was not seriously affected by anything other than surface muddiness, etc. (No flooding.) I'd recommend you try to reserve site #25 if you are in a larger motorhome, fifth-wheel or trailer setup. The surface is more... More

Enjoyed the walk to the to of tower. Beautiful little park. Not of sure if trail was open or closed to tower. Gate locked but was a walk way around it. Interesting stone work and construction.

Very peaceful and quiet. Very close to 99 Bottles winery, which is wonderful. A couple of short hiking trails, pretty easy ones. Would be good for kids.

Camped here for one night while passing through the area. It's near a busy road, so there was some noise. All in all it was a pretty area, but I didn't see anything overly spectacular about it. For us, it was just a convenient place to sleep for the night.

Iowa's highest point also boasts a great state park. Pilot Knob is a wonderful place to hike, picnic, snowmobile, horseback ride, or even drive through. You can see lots of great wildlife here including plenty of deer, turkeys, birds, fox, etc. Legend has it, you can even see an occasional mountain lion.

Pilot Knob is the only park in the area with horse trails. There are also hiking trails, shelter houses, picnic and camping areas. The area around the CCC constructed stone lookout tower was recently cleared so it looks as it originally did in the 1930s. Lots of deer, birds, and rare plants. Great place to go for a hike or...
