This is really a fun building to see if not a bit eclectic. Take the tour to get the inside story, the history and access to rooms and chambers that would otherwise be locked. You also get access to the upper levels of the rotunda if you are willing to climb the narrow stairway. The architecture is extraordinary, the craftsmanship... More

Awesome place, you do have to go through security to get in but it's worth it. Take the guided tour so you can see all the cool stuff and hear the history of the capital. They even take you up to the top of the dome if you are fit enough they do not allow small children in the dome... More

This has to be one of the most beautiful state houses in the country. Tile, paintings, mosaics, grand staircase - this has it all. Whether you take a tour or wander on you own, it is worth seeing. The grounds really add to the overall impression

This is not an all day or even a half day stop. But it's definitely one spot you should visit. We made a day of it by starting at the Capital building, then to the Botanical Center and then for a tour at the Governor's Mansion. The Capital is very pretty on the inside and out. You're not going to... More

It is amazing what governments can do when given the resources to build opulent facilities. Everything in the building was beautiful and a work of art. It is well worth seeing the history and how well it is being maintained.

Spent an entire morning, which was totally worth it. I recommend doing the tour, as you walk from the lower level to the cuspid, where you get a great sensation of the design and the art. Going in the legislative chambers and experiencing how the local government works and where is fascinating.

Restoration work has been going on at the Iowa state capitol for seemingly the last 35 years or so. I thought they were almost done but apparently there are still some issues they're dealing with relative to water and the dome. This building is no less than spectacular, especially considering it was built 130 years ago. It's ornation and detail... More

We are beginning to get the "fever" for these capitol tours! We had the pleasure of being in a group of 4 for our free guided tour, and accompanying us were a couple from Seattle who had traveled to Denver, Kansas, Iowa and next up was Nebraska to knock out 4 more capitol tours before returning home. We had heard... More

We have been to many states and always visit the Capitol when we can. Other than The Capitol Building this is the most beautiful and impressive one we've been in by far. Just stunning outside and in. You can wander around with a self guided tour and the tour guides are helpful. The staff were just lovely. Brilliant and a... More

The art and exhibits were beautiful. We walked around the property, it was exquisite. So much to take in and to learned about US history. FYI- We took our kids (2-7 years old), and I was close to an anxiety attack. A lot of breakable and delicate stuff.
