We hiked at Turkey Run the day before, and this park was much less crowded but still had a nice variety to the trails. We enjoyed it very much. Our only complaint was that we could hear gunshots, which we assumed were from a nearby...More

There is NO electricity at this park and it is very isolated. It is the best for those who like the solitary camping style and don't mind using camp facilities. VERY isolated but very nice!!!!

Shades State Park in Waveland, IN is a great place to go for a nice walk in the woods. There are gullies and washouts and a creek you can walk through and along. The views are plentiful and picture worthy. I recommend you get a...More

I've been to Turkey Run State Park and I recently visited Shades which I enjoyed more. The trails were less crowded and the experience was practically similar. However, if you have a chance go to both because they are equally as enjoyable. Devil's Backbone is...More

Shades State Park has rugged trails that are beautiful to see the landscape. Do recommend wearing hiking boots on the rugged trails and especially after it rains. On our hike we took trail 5 down to where it meets up with trail 4 by Sugar...More

Enjoyable trails for our kids ages 17-7. There are not many services in the park so be prepared to bring in water and food. It was a broiling hot day when we visited and needed all the water we had. Don't overlook this park when...More

We spent several days at Shades tent camping with our kids (10 & 7) and loved it. The campsites are primitive so campers don't come. It's quiet and so beautiful. There is a trail head from the campsite area that connects to some of the...More

Revisited this nature preserve after many years and it was as spectacular as I recalled. There is a brochure that will guide you along the trail and explain the unusual geological and botanical features. The trail registry box was broken, so get one from the...More

IN State Park usually allows one vehicle per camp site. Additional parking is in a designated area. As for water I believe there is a faucet by the restrooms and showers. There is one across from the dump station area.

There's no beach. Short hike to the river (probably 1/4 mile ) where people swim.
