They had a series of exhibits with actors who where supposed to be in-charactor of the earlier times. Some were and some were not. The Ball Canning Exhibit was informative and the ladies running it were good. The best thing was the T.C. Steele exhibition.

Beautiful building with interesting exhibits that take you back in time . These exhibits periodically change and offer a glimpse into some aspect of Indiana history. I thought the exhibits were nicely done and gave the visitor the chance to ask questions which were answered by a museum staff member attired in the clothing of the era. Brought history alive... When in the area recently we saw a Groupon for this attraction and decided to give it a try. The Festival of Trees was going on while we were there and even though it was after Christmas we had a good time looking at all the different trees. The singer that was there that day had an incredible voice and... More

We had no idea the interior of this building was so stunning! We visited to see the Festival of Trees, 72 gorgeous trees decorated by various organizations and businesses in Indy. But we also discovered the glamorous Cole Porter room with player grand piano and a lovely singer. There were "step back in time" exhibits. You could visit Col Lilly... More

The Friday after Thanksgiving we decided to go to the Indiana Historical Society-my parents have a membership here-a very good idea because the exhibits change regularly and some of the standing exhibits like the Cole Porter Music Room are always a welcome respite with talented young crooners recreating Mr. Porter's tunes. On this trip we stumbled upon the Christmas Tree... More

Gorgeous interior, decent snack bar downstairs, and above all, very interesting exhibitions. Read up on the place. The festival of trees in the Christmas season is a blast. Cole Porter room is fascinating and there is a vocalist who will sing you favorite song. Living exhibitions reproduce famous people and events of bygone eras staffed with in-consume actors who will... More

We arrived when the museum opened at 10:00 the day after Thanksgiving. We really enjoyed our visit. This is a beautiful facility in a really neat location on the canal. The festival of trees is really neat. We had a hard time choosing our favorite 3 to vote for. The You are There experiences are so neat. The actors playing... More

Went to the museum to see the Festival of trees but enjoyed the rest of the museum as well. Especially enjoyed the Cole Porter room and the "You were there" experiences. If you need to get lunch while you are there the Starlight Cafe was great!

We visited the IHS today to experience the Festival of Christmas Trees. There were 72 trees decorated to different themes by various businesses and organizations. The trees are exhibited on 4 floors: the Canal, Main, 2 and 4 levels with both stair and elevator access. It took us about 1 1/2 hours to see them all. We enjoyed it a... More

The You Are There exhibit about Col. Eli Lilly and the early days of the Eli Lilly Company is a wonderful exhibit. These live recreations of photographs allow the visitor to step into an historical situation and to actually talk with and ask questions of the re-enactors. This is great for visitors of all ages.
