This is a Photo-Stop and move on. There is really nothing to see but a gated house. There are a few plaques and a place to leave a message on a white-board. Bring your own marker - the one their is dry. If passing by...More
It is a small house, the size of a 2-car garage. Don't know how you could raise a large family in this environment, even more amazing when you could get your kids to sing about it in public. Over-rated but if you wish to touch...More
We stopped quickly on our road trip last month. We weren't sure what to expect of the neighborhood after reading all the reviews, but it was less 'scary' and more 'sad' than some reviews had us believe. It seems like such a forgotten area. We...More
If you want to SEE where the Jackson’s once lived and the community that the house NOW resides in, this drive is for you.
You are not allowed INSIDE the house but you are able to take as many pictures as you would like OUTSIDE...More
If you are interested in MJJ as a person, in his music and history, you should have looked at his birthplace.
It was a nice experience for me.
The house is really small, but well preserved. The garden is well maintained, here and there are...More
As you've probably already read; the surrounding neighborhood is in bad shape. Also you cant walk up to the house much less go inside, however, if your interested in seeing the structure that housed the humble beginnings of a family that lived to be 1...More
You can drive through a neighborhood of closed and dilapidated buildings to see this little house that is not open to the public. Whatever monument used to be in the yard is gone now. The town of Gary has disintegrated into a slum area. You...More

I live in Chicago & I drive to Gary (when necessary). I do NOT recommend taking a bus to Gary with the intention of walking around. Gary has many deserted areas which increases the potential for crime. When you visit MJs home you can only view it from the outside gates. The area is residential and there is not a heavy police presence. Additionally, you will not find a decent hotel in Gary.
So here is what I recommend: rent a car in Chicago. (Much cheaper than an Uber) During the early part of the day, using a GPS system, drive to Gary to view the house. Then head back to Chicago and enjoy what Chicago has to offer.
