This is an outdoor museum of sorts on the site of the old city. The big statue of Ramses II is covered to help protect it so be sure to see it. It does not take long to visit.

The Site house the Memphis museum which in turn house houses the Ramesses II statue. Also there are many other smaller statues dotting the site right out in the open, the most prominent one being an alabaster sphinx. My suggestion will be to give the site a miss; you won’t miss anything if you end up visiting the Egyptian Museum... More

Not to be confused with the home of Elvis this site allows inspection of some fine and extremely well preserved statues from close proximity. Entry is cheap at LE40 for adults and LE20 for students. Total time needed here, even with a guide, will be about 30 minutes but it is time very well spent. No steps or strenuous walking... More

I had mixed feelings in our visit in Memphis. On one side, the site is not very impressive, probably scarcely interesting for many people. On the other side, I am happy I was in one of the most critical places in ancient Egypt. I am happy I made it. By the way, as there are just a few tourists you... More

Memphis is a beautiful historical site with few statues remaining and sphinx from the ancient time when it used to be a Capital city. It is a small site with nice artifacts. Due to lack of tourists many of the souvenir shops on the site are closed. Unfortunately one has to travel through very poor and dirty areas outside Cairo... More

We took a tour of Ancient Egypt with local company Memphis Tour. The tour manager, Islam Abdullah assisted us from the airport till we check in the Le Meridien Giza. We did a tour of Cairo with a fantastic local company, Egypt Tailor Made, where we visited Mephistopheles Historical Site. We had a great guide, Leila, who explained the history to us of the area and walked us around. My suggestion is to use a trusted LOCAL company as a guide. I believe it's important to support the locals.

Well worth the visit. We set off at 08:15hrs and went to the necropolis first. Here, I saw the first Egyptian pyramid (the step pyramid of Djoser) which is quite unlike those at Giza and smaller. Then, I went into different tombs. Tombs of ministers and their daughters (Unas, Inefrt, Idut) which are, like Djoser`s pyramid, older than the pyramids... More

The statue tucked away in it's protective building is very impressive and nice to see the details of the head area up close. Incredible carving skills. However the remainder of Memphis is very forgettable. More aggressive vendors and just pray you don't need the toilet. It is something from a horror movie with a smell to match. And they have... A small and isolated site which probably warrants and hours visit at most. I think a dedicated trip here particularly without a decent guide to place the site in its historical context would be a waste of time. Fortunately I had a very good guide and was doing this visit as part of a day trip to the region. The... More
