Best to find a time when this place is not so busy to enjoy its charms and hiking. Very friendly folks here. Bring hiking shoes and expect some slippery surfaces and maybe to tread in a little water if rain happened recently. Really pleasant scenery...More

Chose to spend thanksgiving weekend near Starved Rock so we could get some outdoor exercise in. The trails are beautiful, canyons, overlooks, interesting terrain under foot (sand, rocks, paths, steps) rivers, waterfalls....so much variety!

Maybe they could make a movie about this place and get Molly Ringwold to star in It. (Remember Sixteen Candles)? Anyway, this is a truly spectacular state park, the largest in the Illinois park system. Even better, it also free admission. It is truly amazing...More

We've always heard good things about this place and it didn't disappoint. We got there about 10am. It was free so that was good since I have a big family. We did read that we shouldn't bring a stroller which was great advice. We just...More

Always a great place to hike and explore. We had a great time and it was not too hard to do. Then found a smaller, dirtier climb that again was a lot of fun

Beautifully laid out and well organized trails. Great for a day or weekend away. Highly recommend the lodge, as it sits on the trial heads and makes for a great starting and ending location.

It was unseasonably cold, but we still had a nice time. Lots of stairs in the main section of the park, but a nice finished trail in many areas. The side past the visitors center is more rugged.

Wow. Totally amazing. We did several different trails. It rained for two days so the trails were muddy in places. Well marked. Saw some squirrels but no other animals.

I would say no. I have never heard of anyone dog sledding in this area. They cross country ski at Mathieson so maybe a call to the Park Ranger.

I'd also recommend Matthiesen for the size. You will be able to take a shorter walk and still see nice canyons. You probably won't be able to do much with a stroller at any of the parks, so I'd just enjoy the smaller place.
