Trails were fairly easy and great scenery! Trails were marked well. Lots of great photo ops too. Restrooms were clean and they had vending machines. Had a nice picnic area also.

Great scenery but to see the canyons, be prepared for lots of stairs. A walking stick would be helpful navigating rocks to get closer to the waterfalls.

My husband and I loved exploring here. Lots of canyons and a couple of small waterfalls. My husband loved the "off trail" hiking. (traversing rocks and stepping stones, walking against canyon walls, etc.) I was even able to do some of it! Lots of hiking...More

After all of the hype about Starved Rock (which it deserves), this was truly a hidden gem. Lots of stairs but worth every step!! Don't skip this park!!!

This was very serene and peaceful surroundings it would have been perfect if the leaves had changed and the falls were not dried up. The trails clean and clear but it is ALOT of steps and if you go down you have to come back...More

Spent the day hiking with four of my grandkids and their parents. Beautiful way to spend the day. While the streams were very low and the waterfalls were just a trickle due to limited rains, the setting was peaceful and full of beauty. Hardly anyone...More

Matthiessen Park dells area canyon is always a great trip. Once you tackle the long staircase there are several trails both above and inside below canyon walls. Check out a few caves , waterfall amazing rock formations .

We wanted to check out the trails and waterfalls. No water in the waterfalls in September, though it's been pretty rainy. The trail could use some upkeep, and refreshing. (Downed trees over waking areas), You can see where stairs or railings use to be. Be...More

There's really no swimming at either park. This is really a good thing because the water quality at both parks is rather poor. At starved Rock only crazy people with a death wish would try Swimming in the Illinois river. At... More

I don't think you'll have an issue. My best advice would be to call them 815-667-4211. Lots of things that go in these parks really don't make sense. Again I would call them. This is number for both parks. Good Luck

The State Park is a marked path hiking park. The Upper & Lower Dells are nice to view. The kids will need to be careful cause some of the pathways are narrow and very high on top of some canyons. Will need water proof... More
