One of the funnest experiences of my college career has been a visit to the Altgeld Bell Tower. Go with friends and you will not regret it. The views are breath-taking. They even allowed us to ring the bells!

Altgeld Hall Tower is in the Mathematics building behind Alma Mater. You can tour the tower all the way to the top to see where they play the chimes. Most days, recordings are played, but once a week, an actual person plays them. They may let you play them, too! Fascinating for Alumni, History buffs and music lovers!

Altgeld Hall is, basically, at an entrance to Campus. It was built in 1896-97 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The "University Chime" rings on the quarter hours, the half hour, and on the hour, and is really nice to hear. I think people just stop to listen to the chime. I know that we did.

I spent more than three years taking mathematics courses in the Altgeld Hall. It is one of the most iconic building of the campus, and has a long history. The math library in it is also super in terms of the size of their book stock.

Our tour of the Altgeld bell tower was priceless! Sue made all of us feel so welcomed and invited anyone who could show a little promise on the 'practice board' to go ahead and play the real thing....a total gas! Also, we were given the option to climb up into the tower itself to see and hear the bells up... More

Having spent 4 years at UofI as an undergrad, the ringing of the Altgeld Hall bells at every quarter hour was an integral part of being a student, as strange as that may sound. I went there before the era of cell phones, and the bells were a gentle reminder of the time without having to look at your watch.... More

This is where I took my ACT exam in High School. Later I was a janitor in this magnificent building. It is so cool and can ring your chimes as you work. It is constructed like a castle with old fashioned spiral stair cases and archers windows.

I had always heard the chimes on campus but to actually meet the "chime lady" that has been doing it since 1971 was amazing. Since we were there when students were gone we got a much longer tour than normal I think and we even got to play the chimes!! Mrs. Wood knew it was my birthday so her concert... More

Chief Illiniwek is gone but Altgeld Bell Tower remains, one of the grand traditions of the University of Illinois. Altgeld Hall, located at 1409 West Green, near the magnificent bronze statue of Alma Mater and Illini Union at the northwest end of the Main Quad, was built in 1896-97 in a Richardsonian Romanesque style. Originally, it served as the University... More

Amazing late 19th Century University of Illinois Building. Circular Marble steps are time worn leading to the tower where the Carillons are played daily by hand.
