Those of us in the west never really think about where Sheba was. The Ethiopians are adamant that the Queen of Sheba was theirs, not a Yemeni lady, and there are strong arguments to support that view, starting with this palace. Whether it was indeed Sheba's or not, it is an extensive footprint of ancient times, and this is worth the short trip to the edge of Axum to see this palace.

Not Worth a Visit

There is nothing special about these ruins. In fact, you don't see any ruins only walls put up by recent archaeologists. The real walls are supposedly way beneath the current floor level. In short, what you are looking at is modern. When we climbed the rickety platform, my guide told me the palace was really beneath the empty field next door!

See this only if you have nothing else better to do.

The ruins are not bad but definitely take a guided tour for full effect. It's alleged that the palace dates are much later than the Queen of Sheba but it's possible that her actual palace could be underneath. The ruins are in ok repair and you get the general idea. Across the road is a field of steles and allegedly the largest one is the tomb of the Queen of Sheba. Again speculation.
There is a view point to get an overview of the palace.

Interesting in in the area

Sept 2019

The picture pretty accurately shows what you will see when you visit the "Queen of Sheba Palace". If you are in the area it is worth a stop & it is interesting to hear the tour guides "version" of the palace & place in history. However, there is differences of opinion if it actually is the palace of the queen of Sheba and I wouldn't go much out of my way to see it.

If you're in Axum, definitely worth the visit!

I love the history and tradition associated with the ancient kingdom of Axum. The Queen of Sheba Palace is an essential piece of that.

There is not a great deal to see. There is no roof and low walls that all look the same. Souvenir sellers will be there

A restoration in the ruins of the original palace

It's a restoration above the ruins of the palace that was built 1000 years b.c. By queen Sheba . Consists of several rooms and halls and ancient steps . Surrounded by a Very nice view . Worth going there

Ruins - 3km from the city

The most interesting part of the palace is its history, I suppose. You won't see any palace, it is in ruins. You will see it in half an hour. It is better to have a guide to explain the meaning of this sight. The tickets should be bought in the ticket office in the middle of Axum, otherwise you have to go or drive back 3 km and buy them.

I didn't think that this ruin was anything special. I really would not bother visiting it. Apparently it isn't even the Queen of Sheba's Palace.
